Well, since you mentioned this was for an intranet, you can use any method
to check mod_date that you like, provided you have an app server or a
back-end app that can dynamically parse or create the pages for you.

The web server might check the actual file modification date but you can
ignore that and use something you added into the page itself, either as a
(hidden) comment or field. That also means that you can have *multiple*
levels of modification histories: minor ones, say, for correcting typos or
major ones, say, for updating the main content. Your app server/app can thus
determine what to do with a page after parsing out what level of mods
contained therein.
