I too am working on this issue for my extranets. We do not tag our pages
with Last Modified dates because there may be information that is 6 months
old but still 'current' or relevant. However, if the date were on the page,
users might think it was not current and then question the validity of the
entire site (we have that issue with annual user guides). 

At a previous job, the custom CMS had built in expiration dates for each
type of content template - so for example, a press release automatically had
a 1 year expiration and a case study was 45 days, etc. Then, as the
expiration drew near, the system would generate reminder messages to the
designated owner and allow for a 1 time extension. Otherwise the content
expired. 

I am looking into doing this on our current sites but I don't know what's
possible with our CMS (TeamSite). Would be interested in other responses as
well.
