Design for WAP and handhelds has matured significantly in the past year
since our last SIG on the topic. This  meeting presents the current
challenges facing designers today through discussion and case studies
for  wireless design solutions.

Dervala Hanley, Vindigo: Challenges designing for a sophisticated but
resource-constrained platform, using  BREW. 

Anthony M. Townsend, NYCwireless: The free wireless networking movement,
grassroots origins, current  projects, and future directions. The impact
of wireless technologies, interfaces, and applications on urban life
and city developement and planning.

Bios               
Sudhir Bhatia, Senior Industrial Designer, Symbol Technologies
Sudhir Bhatia is a Sr. Industrial Designer/Mechanical Engineer at Symbol
Technologies, in Holtsville NY.  (www.symbol.com/design)  He manages
teams doing field research, user interface development, concept
development as well as validation and user testing of  hand held
wireless computers.  He has been  instrumental in the development of
usability tools used for interface testing.  Before taking on industrial
design Sudhir worked as a mechanical engineer at Symbol.  He holds a BS
in Mechanical Engineering from the  University of Rochester and is
presently finishing up a Masters in Industrial Design at Pratt
Institute.  

Dervala Hanley, Director of Product Development, Vindigo
Dervala has been involved with Vindigo since its inception three years
ago. Dervala oversees Vindigo's BREW  and WAP products, and has worked
extensively on Palm OS features such as mapping. Before Vindigo, Dervala
was Director of Billable Services at Juno Online Services, part of the
team that launched Juno's for-fee ISP to  free email users. Dervala
previously developed first-generation corporate websites at Presco in
London and at  JP Morgan in London.

Anthony M. Townsend, NYCwireless
Anthony is a co-founder of NYCwireless, a not-for-profit corporation
dedicated to deploying free 802.11b  wireless Internet nodes in public
spaces in the New York area. (www.nycwireless.net) He is also a research
scientist and lecturer at New York Univeristy's Taub Urban Research
Center, and is completing a Ph.D. in  urban planning from MIT.

Paul Winter, Vice President eCommerce Telephone/Wireless Products, TD
Waterhouse 
Paul is the Product Manager for all US retail automated telephone and
wireless products, including touch-tone  & speech recognition telephone,
and HDML,WML, Palm and Pocket PC wireless products. He has launched all
of TD Waterhouse's US wireless and speech recognition products since
2000. He manages the telephone &  wireless business development and
marketing including carrier/partner relationships and promotions. Paul
has  over 14 years experience in financial services and product
management, with TD Waterhouse, ILX Systems  and The Vanguard Group. He
received his MBA from West Chester State (Pennsylvania) University, a
Project  Manangement Graduate Certificate from Penn State University,
and a BA in Psychology from LaSalle  University.     

Scott Weiss
Scott Weiss, principal of Usable Products Company, is an Information
Architect and is the author of "Handheld  Usability," published by John
Wiley & Sons, available this Spring. He worked in the software industry
from  1989 to 1996 designing software and managing software projects.
His former employers include Microsoft,  Apple, Sybase, and Autodesk.
Scott founded the Wireless Roundtable, an ad hoc group focused on
usability  guidelines for the wireless platform, has taught for the MFA
program at Parsons' School of Digital Design, and  is the Chair of the
New York New Media Association's Special Interest Group on Design.
