[Michael Buckland]

Melvin Earl ("Bill") Maron, a noted pioneer of Information Science, 
passed away last September. He was noted for early contributions to 
data-base design, probabilistic information retrieval, and, with David 
Blair, retrieval performance evaluation. He was a professor in the 
University of California School of Information from 1966 to 1991.
