Assistant Professor of History of Science

The Department of the History of Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for an Assistant Professor position (tenure-track) beginning August 2017. We are especially interested in applications in the following areas: (1) history of science or technology before 1800; (2) history of the human sciences; or (3) history of information technologies. We are also interested in applicants whose area of study lies outside the United States. We are open to a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and methodological approaches. We are particularly interested in candidates who can promote interdisciplinary synergies between the History of Science, Medicine, & Technology (HSMT) program and other study programs in the Department of History; the Holtz Center for Science & Technology Studies; and/or other programs in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences. The successful candidate is expected to conduct significant scholarly research leading to publication in the area of specialization; teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and actively participate in the broader HSMT community at UW-Madison. Appropriate departmental, university, and public outreach service is required.

A Ph.D. in History of Science; History; Science & Technology Studies; or closely related discipline prior to the start of the appointment is required.

If the writing sample forms part of a larger book manuscript or dissertation, please include an abstract and table of contents or a statement of how the writing sample fits in with the larger project.  You will be asked to provide contact information for three references; they will each receive an electronic link through which they can upload a signed letter of reference.  The letter of application should include a statement of interest that discusses current and future research as well as anticipated course offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates should comment specifically on their capacity to teach current HSMT undergraduate courses as well as new courses that would complement existing offerings. Preliminary interviews will be conducted by phone or Skype.
