We deeply regret to inform you that CAS Director Emeritus Dale Baker
died on Sunday, December 11, in Columbus. He was 85 years of age.

Mr. Baker joined CAS in 1946 as an Assistant Editor, became CAS Director
in 1958, and served in that capacity for 28 years. In 1983 he was
appointed to the additional position of Deputy Executive Director,
American Chemical Society. Mr. Baker was named Director Emeritus upon
retiring from CAS in 1986. Starting in the 1960s under Mr. Baker's
direction, CAS developed an automated information processing system that
initiated CAS's emergence as a premier electronic information resource.
In the early 1980s, he became a founder of the STN International
network in cooperation with Germany's FIZ Karlsruhe, making a wealth of
scientific information more widely available for chemists and allied
scientists through a new concept in distributed processing on a global
scale.

Dale Baker garnered many honors during his career, including the
American Chemical Society's Patterson-Crane Award and Herman Skolnik
Award. He was also inducted into the Ohio Science and Technology Hall of
Fame in 2003. Born in Bucyrus, Ohio, Dale Baker was a graduate and loyal
alumnus of The Ohio State University, earning both Bachelor's and
Master's degrees there. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the
University in 1986.

We have been informed by the family that Mr. Baker's funeral service
will be private. Any messages sent to CAS in honor of Dale Baker or in
condolence will be shared with his CAS colleagues and with his family.

Eric Shively
