Joette,
I am new in this field and don't have anything specific to work on at this
moment in term of HCI, but I hope this might give us some idea:
- ACM just finished their SIGCHI conference last week (
http://www.acm.org/chi2002/ <http://www.acm.org/chi2002/> ) and they have
interesting topics there. We can also gain quite a lot of information from
their "community place" ( http://www.chiplace.org <http://www.chiplace.org>
).
- Katherine Everitt and Scott Lederer from UC Berkley conducted a usability
comparison between StarOffice Writer 5.2 and MS Word 2000 (
http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/courses/is271/f01/projects/WordStar/finalReport
.html
<http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/courses/is271/f01/projects/WordStar/finalRepor
t.html> )
- Susanne Eklund, Micahl Feldman, and Mary Trombley, also from UC Berkely,
conducted another usability comparison between StarOffice Calc and MS Excel
( http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/courses/is271/f01/projects/StarCalc/
<http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/courses/is271/f01/projects/StarCalc/> )
- An open panel discussions between HCI practitioners and end users?
- Collaboration in sponsoring a panel program with other HCI-related SIGs
such as SIG-IA? (I don't know whether this has been done in previous time)
ranti.

Subject: [Sighci-l] HCI Help Request
We are attempting to make HCI a dynamic and exciting SIG, so this is an
earnest plea to all members of the SIG to help us accomplish this goal.
Assuming that we all joined SIGHCI because we are interested in this
important topic, we would like to hear from you about what you are working
on. Do you have any accomplishments or current research that you would like
to openly share on the list serve? Please do!
Also, we would like to hear any ideas you might have for upcoming panels
(especially at the annual conferences), or activities you would like to
undertake through the SIG.
In November, at the annual conference, would you like us to plan some
activities just for SIG/HCI members?
We're all in this together and we need your help in reviving SIGHCI. Please
help.
We're looking forward to hearing from you,
Barbara Lynch and Joette Stefl-Mabry
