In direct response to Andrew's questions:

HCI as a field is not dying.

ASIS&T is dying. People used to go to ASIST when looking for jobs. I can
count on 1 hand the number of people who submitted their vitas.

SIG USE had a very good workshop at the conference... wonderful for its
brainstorming and idea generating discussions. If it hadn't been for this
workshop, I as a student should have been at ACM's CSCW conference which
was the same week.

CSCW has 2 things over ASIST. 1) really cool people go to it, some of the
best researchers I've ever met (including people from the UK an Europe).
2) CSCW treats their students very well.
