Advances in Library Administration and Organization
Challenging the ?Jacks of All Trades but Masters of None? Librarian Syndrome
Publication due 2018
Series Editor: Samantha Hines, Peninsula College
Volume Editor: George J. Fowler, Old Dominion University
Librarianship may be said to be facing an identity crisis. It may also be
said that librarianship has been facing an identity crisis since it was
proposed as a profession. With the advent of technology that lowers
barriers to the access of information, the mission of a library has become
indistinct. This volume will explore the current purpose of librarianship
and libraries, how we become ?Masters of our Domains?, develop expertise in
various elements of the profession, and how we extend outward into our
communities.
Proposals in the following areas would be of particular interest:
? What is the purpose of a library in a community? And what roles
in the community best align with that purpose?
? How ought we gather and implement expertise from outside the
profession?
? How can we communicate and garner support from the government,
the private sector and users in order to achieve our purpose?
? How can libraries balance demands to serve other needs that
detract from the library?s ability to fulfil its purpose?
? How can libraries build community around this purpose, and how
ought they reach out to their communities to engage and serve them?
? How can libraries demonstrate positive impact on young
generations?
? What opportunities are opened to libraries and librarians by
recent and potential future technological advancements?
This will be the second volume of *Advances in Library Administration and
Organization* (ALAO) to publish in 2018.
About the Advances in Library Administration and Organization series
*ALAO*
offers long-form research, comprehensive discussions of theoretical
developments, and in-depth accounts of evidence-based practice in library
administration and organization. The series answers the questions, ?How
have libraries been managed, and how should they be managed?? It goes
beyond a platform for the sharing of research to provide a venue for
dialogue across issues, in a way that traditional peer reviewed journals
cannot. Through this series, practitioners can glean new approaches in
challenging times and collaborate on the exploration of scholarly solutions
to professional quandaries.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR:
Many libraries are experimenting with publishing their metadata as Linked Data to open up bibliographic silos, usually based on MARC records, to the Web. The libraries who have published Linked Data have all used different data models for structuring their bibliographic data. Some are using a FRBR-based model where Works, Expressions and Manifestations are represented separately. Others have chosen basic Dublin Core, dumbing down their data into a lowest common denominator format. The proliferation of data models limits the reusability of bibliographic data. In effect, libraries have moved from MARC silos to Linked Data silos of incompatible data models. There is currently no universal model for how to represent bibliographic metadata as Linked Data, even though many attempts for such a model have been made.
In this webinar, you?ll see:
* a survey of published bibliographic Linked Data, the data models proposed for representing bibliographic data as RDF, and tools used for conversion from MARC records
* an analysis of different use cases for bibliographic Linked Data and how they affect the data model
* recommendations for choosing a data model
We also present efforts at the National Library of Finland to open up our bibliographic metadata, including the national bibliography Fennica, the national discography Viola and the article database Arto, as Linked Data while trying to learn from the examples of others. We are setting up a conversion process from MARC records to BIBFRAME and Schema.org compliant RDF, which we are going to publish as Linked Data using various technologies including a SPARQL endpoint, HDT compressed RDF dumps and a Linked Data Fragments API.
This webinar is an extended, in-depth version of the SWIB16 conference presentation ?From MARC silos to Linked Data silos??
Minimum Experience Level:
Basic familiarity of bibliographic metadata and Linked Data assumed
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Osma Suominen works as an information systems specialist at the National Library of Finland. His current activities are centered around the publishing of bibliographic data, including the Finnish national bibliography Fennica, as Linked Data. He is also one of the creators of the Finto.fi thesaurus and ontology service and is leading development of the Skosmos vocabulary browser used in Finto. Osma Suominen earned his doctoral degree at Aalto University while doing research on semantic portals and quality of controlled vocabularies within the FinnONTO series of projects. His past accomplishments include the Skosify vocabulary analysis and quality improvement tool, and data.aalto.fi, the Linked Data service of Aalto University.

________________________________
Dear all,
In Spring 2016, ASIST Publications Committee surveyed ASIS&T Publications' users concerning their needs of ASIS&T current publications. Numerous comments focused on the former Annual Review of Information Science & Technology (ARIST), which ceased to be published in 2011. Given that volume of feedback, this survey focuses specifically on ARIST.
Please follow the link below to complete a short survey not later than March 10, 2017.

AIMS
While the number of digital collections have been increased constantly and
in diverse practices, there are some concerns regarding the relevancy and
value of the efforts to expand, enhance, and sustain these collections to
society at large. These concerns call for discussions and exemplifications
of how research efforts and practices on digital libraries improve the
quality of human life in all dimensions, such as education, business,
socialization, public administration, culture, and humanities. In
addition, these questions initiate quest to discover novel methodologies of
producing, managing, analyzing, and storing digital collections as well as
deliver state-of-the-art services in a complex, connected, and
ever-changing environment that matter to our daily lives. Therefore, the
theme of ICADL 2017 is ?Data, Information, and Knowledge for Digital Lives?
which is open to all opportunities that illustrate how digital libraries,
digital collections, and corresponding methods would lead to better lives.
The 19th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL
2017) will be co-located with The 8th Asia-Pacific Conference on Library &
Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP) Conference at Chulalongkorn
University, Bangkok, Thailand under a collective title ?International Forum
on Data, Information, and Knowledge for Digital Lives?. Hosting these
conferences together in a heart of Bangkok would bring a diverse group of
academic and professional community members from all parts of the world to
exchange their cutting-edge knowledge, experience and practices in various
relevant issues in digital libraries, and other related fields.
