Issued in 2010, the original recommended practice provided all parties in the information supply chain with straightforward guidance about metadata formatting to ensure the exchange of accurate metadata between content providers and knowledge base developers. Building on the initial recommendations, the draft revision focuses on the more granular, complex issues that cause problems in metadata supply, including consortia-specific metadata transfer, metadata transfer for open access publications, and metadata transfer for e-books and conference proceedings. "Since the first Recommended Practice was issued, over 50 publishers and content providers have endorsed KBART and demonstrated their commitment to good quality metadata provision," states Magaly Bascones, Data Manager at Jisc Collections and Co-chair of the KBART Working Group. "The endorsement process requires submission of a sample file and verification by the KBART Working Group. With this endorsement, users can be assured that the providers' metadata is trusted and has the required level of granularity without the burdensome task of title-by-title checking." "The experience of the endorsing publishers and feedback from a survey of libraries and consortia identified the areas of focus for this expanded KBART revision," explains Chad Hutchens, Head of Digital Collections and Digital Resources Librarian and Co-chair of the KBART Working Group. "Following the public comment period, the KBART Working Group will make any needed revisions and finalize the recommendations for publication. Also available is a KBART Information Hub on the NISO website that provides supporting materials about KBART, including the KBART Glossary, endorsement information, a registry of knowledge base supply chain contacts, and background information on OpenURL and knowledge bases." "Following the publication of the KBART Phase II Recommended Practice, the project will transfer to Standing Committee status within NISO," states Nettie Lagace, NISO's Associate Director for Programs. "This Committee will be responsible for managing the endorsement process, providing ongoing education and promotion of KBART, and maintaining the Information Hub." The KBART Phase II draft is open for public comment through October 4, 2013. To download the draft or submit online comments, visit the KBART Information Hub at: www.niso.org/workrooms/kbart. Webinar: Implementing Linked Data in Developing Countries and Low-Resource Conditions Date: September 25, 2013 Time: 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time) Event webpage: http://www.niso.org/news/events/2013/dcmi/developing ============================================================================ === ABOUT THE WEBINAR Open data is a crucial prerequisite for inventing and disseminating the innovative practices needed for agricultural development. To be usable, data must not just be open in principle-i.e., covered by licenses that allow re-use. Data must also be published in a technical form that allows it to be integrated into a wide range of applications. The webinar will be of interest to any institution seeking ways to publish and curate data in the Linked Data cloud. This webinar describes the technical solutions adopted by a widely diverse global network of agricultural research institutes for publishing research results. The talk focuses on AGRIS, a central and widely-used resource linking agricultural datasets for easy consumption, and AgriDrupal, an adaptation of the popular, open-source content management system Drupal optimized for producing and consuming linked datasets. Agricultural research institutes in developing countries share many of the constraints faced by libraries and other documentation centers, and not just in developing countries: institutions are expected to expose their information on the Web in a re-usable form with shoestring budgets and with technical staff working in local languages and continually lured by higher-paying work in the private sector. Technical solutions must be easy to adopt and freely available. SPEAKERS Johannes Keizer has worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN since 1998, primarily as head of the FAO documentation group. The bibliographic database AGRIS and the multilingual concept scheme AGROVOC were completely remodeled under his leadership. In the Office of Knowledge Exchange, Research and Extensions, he heads a staff of 20-the AIMS (Agricultural Information Management Standards and Services) team-which provides standards, tools, and advice for FAO stakeholders. The AIMS Team provides the technical backbone for the global Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development (CIARD) Initiative. Through EC framework projects such as NeON, D2Science, and agINFRA, the AIMS Team has channeled the results of innovative European research into the international work of FAO to combat hunger and poverty in the world. Caterina Caracciolo is senior information specialist at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). After working at the National Council of Research (CNR) in Pisa, she joined FAO in 2006. Since then, she has worked on various aspects related to information management and sharing, with special focus on metadata. She is currently involved in the SemaGrow project and part of the AGROVOC management team at FAO. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Amsterdam. The registration website is: http://www.asis.org/Conferences/webinars/Webinar-PASIG-9-26-2013-register.ht ml Title: How to Assess your Digital Value at Risk - An Introduction to the Digital Value at Risk (DVAR) Calculator Abstract: One of the challenges facing archivists who are working with born-digital or digitised content is understanding how to develop a systematic approach for identifying the risks of losing digital assets stored in a variety of media. Understanding how much your various digital assets are at risk, and what the consequences of this loss could be for your institution, can help you to develop an optimised approach for digital preservation. Bench marking your digital assets register against key variables such as provenance, type of file format, preservation strategy, storage media, and other factors can also help you to prioritise your investment case for digital preservation. The Digital Value at Risk (DVAR) Calculator is a new tool that applies a risk/consequence model towards the potential loss of digital assets over time. Mike Quinn will provide an introduction to the risk/consequence model and provide a live demonstration of the DVAR tool, using case examples that will be relevant to memory institutions, academic, public sector and commercial archivists. Following the webinar, the DVAR tool and user guide will be made freely available to PASIG members. Speaker: Mike Quinn is a Director at Tessella, a leader in digital preservation technology, consulting and research. Tessella's archiving solutions are in use by national libraries and archives on four continents, and includes Preservica, a cloud-based digital preservation service launched in 2012. Mike has over 25 years experience in launching award winning B2B electronic commerce and SaaS solution companies in over 30 countries. Mike has a BSc. in Psychology and Zoology from the University of Manchester. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Date: October 16, 2013 Time: 11:00 - 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) Event webpage: http://www.niso.org/news/events/2013/econtent ABOUT THE VIRTUAL CONFERENCE The impact of electronic content cannot be understated. Through constantly evolving technologies, electronic content has made its way into almost every facet of our lives. Platforms are evolving and improving at a breakneck pace, prices for devices are accessible in a way that they weren't just a few years ago, the e-content is becoming richer and more interactive, and publishers are developing profitable business models to respond. Many higher education institutions find it an ongoing challenge to respond to the latest technology changes. Compounding this problem is the fact that electronic content has now become a priority and expectation for the academic and publishing community. NISO's third virtual conference examines the issues and opportunities this rapid growth of electronic content has presented and challenged our community with, as well as thoughts on the future and how information organizations can successfully serve their patrons.
