*Digital Collections Archivist*



The Georgia Tech Library invites applications for an energetic, flexible,
and innovative professional to join the Archives Collections team of the
Georgia Tech Library. The Georgia Institute of Technology is a top tier
university and has several nationally recognized programs in science and
engineering. The Georgia Tech Library (http://www.library.gatech.edu) is a
member of the Association of Research Libraries, and was awarded the 2007
Association of College and Research Libraries’ *Excellence in Academic
Libraries Award*.



In support of the Institute’s instructional and research mission, this
position is responsible for identifying, collecting, managing, and
preserving archival materials including campus e-publications, born-digital
materials, and other archival collections, some of which are available via
the library-hosted Georgia Tech institutional repository (SMARTech) and the
Archives’ digital portal, currently running on the Omeka platform.  S/he
will also manage the preservation of materials in the Archives’ dark
digital repository, currently running on DSpace software. S/he will also
participate in the development of a repository for the department’s content
management system, which will be based on the DSpace and Fedora software
applications. The Digital Collections Archivist will manage the campus
e-publications program, a part of SMARTech.  The archivist will participate
in a team environment in refining the collecting scopes of the Archives
Department, in devising selection and appraisal criteria, and in carrying
out the department's collecting and appraisal functions for digital
collections.  S/he serves as the Archives liaison to the library’s
Scholarly Communication and Digital Services Department (SCDS) and serves
on the library's Research Data Project Team.  In this role, the archivist
will participate in a team-based approach to strategic digital curation
planning and activities.  S/he will prepare collections for digital
conversion in conjunction with SCDS, and will advise the library's
Information Technology and Development Department of the Archives’
technology needs. S/he provides web content to the library’s web manager
who is responsible for the design and maintenance of the Archives’ portion
of the library’s web site. The Digital Collections Archivist will also
provide reference service on the Archives Department reference desk,
participate in archival instruction classes and library committees, and
will perform other archival duties on an as needed basis.

*Qualifications:*

*Required*: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information
sciences or master’s degree in archival administration, or equivalent
advanced degree. Minimum one to two years of archival experience; evidence
of ability to work well with staff, users, and donors; knowledge of
appropriate digital library technologies and related accepted best
practices, digital objects creation, data curation, and web-based
applications; understanding of issues related to digital archival materials
such as digital conversion and intellectual property issues; excellent
interpersonal communication skills; and a demonstrated record of
professional contributions. Demonstrated capacity to assist in providing
leadership and vision for the archives in an increasingly digital
environment. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively inside and
outside the library in cross-functional project working groups. *Desired*:
Archives experience in an academic setting; experience in undertaking
library-based digital collection projects. Working knowledge of mark-up
archival practices such as EAD.  Working knowledge of current  metadata
standards such as METS, MODS and Dublin Core. Knowledge of DSpace,
Archivists’ Toolkit or similar archival management software system.

*Salary & Benefits: *Appointments will be made at the Archivist I
(entry-level) or Archivist II level, based on qualifications and
experience.  Minimum salary for Librarian I is $44,000.   Librarians are
members of the General Faculty and are non-tenured.  The benefits package
includes 21 days vacation, 12 paid holidays, 12 days sick leave,
health/dental insurance options, and retirement options including
TIAA/CREF.  Relocation Allowance supported by the Price Gilbert, Jr.
