JCDL 2010 Workshop: Music Information Retrieval for the Masses

  Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL), Surfers Paradise (Gold  
Coast, Australia), June 21 – 25 2010

Not everyone can sing in tune.  Not everyone can write, play or  
graphically describe a sequence of notes.  Not everyone can name the  
musical instruments occurring in a piece of music, or its genre.   
However, many people want to find music that they are interested in.

How can the average person, not the average musician, retrieve music  
from large collections?  How do we support their information needs?   
Indeed, what are their music information needs—what are they looking  
for, and how can we help them to locate new music, or to manage and  
interact with their personal music collection?

Workshop Objectives:

·      To provide a forum for discussion on the music information  
retrieval needs of everyday people, and the software / hardware to  
support their music information behaviours

·      To support discussion of research methods for uncovering music  
information needs

·      To highlight innovative software and hardware demos for  
everyday music needs

·      To create an opportunity for music information retrieval  
researchers in the southern hemisphere and Asia to network with their  
peers

Topics

We invite submissions on a wide range of topics in the intersection of  
music information retrieval and digital libraries, including:

·      Music information seeking behavior

·      Music perception and cognition, as applied to MIR system  
development

·      User studies and MIR system evaluation

·      User interfaces and user models

·      Music knowledge representation, user tags, and music metadata

·      Personal music library management

·      Music digital libraries and archives

·      Content-based querying and retrieval

·      Tools for integrating music retrieval into everyday activities


Format and Submissions

We invite short (up to four pages) papers on the above topics.  Papers  
can present new research, provide an overview of an existing research  
programme, demonstrate a novel software / hardware application, or  
pose a challenge to researchers.

Workshop Activities

The workshop will be organized around presentation and discussion of  
accepted papers. The workshop will end with a panel discussion of  
future directions for everyday music information research.

June 11:  notification of acceptance
June 18:  submission of final paper versions
