Position: Digital Initiatives Librarian

Miami University Libraries, Oxford, OH, has an opening in the Digital  
Initiatives Department for a Digital Initiatives Librarian. We seek a  
self-motivated, energetic, service-oriented, flexible team-player  
with a can-do attitude who is interested in applying information  
technology to library services; someone who can embrace an  
environment of continual improvement and change in an organization  
that strives to stay close to the cutting edge of technology. This  
position reports to the Head of Digital Initiatives.
Responsibilities include and are not limited to: providing project  
management of selected digital collections and projects including  
oversight of production, quality control, metadata, access and  
delivery and maintenance; Coordinating the efforts of library staff  
working with users of the Miami University Institutional Repository,  
currently under development; Actively seeking out and recruiting new  
user communities and content for the repository in collaboration with  
library staff; Participating as an active team member and developer  
in the building, maintenance and technical support of the repository;  
Investigating new and innovative ways to create, organize, and  
deliver online collections to clients; actively seeking out  
opportunities to work with stakeholders in the creation of digital  
collections and services; participating and contributing to the  
Libraries’ team organization.

Requirements include a graduate library degree from an ALA accredited  
institution; flexibility working in an environment of continual  
change and the ability to foster that in others; ability to work  
independently as well as with all levels of staff and library  
customers; strong project management skills; knowledge of current and  
evolving digital library standards and best practices; Knowledge of  
database technology, OCR/digital imaging standards and practices,  
HTML editors and web publishing, and interface design; strong  
computer knowledge and experience with multiple operating system  
platforms, especially Unix/Linux; demonstrated skills and interest in  
applying technology to library services; strong written and oral  
communication skills; initiative and ability to conceive and carry  
out projects; ability to meet the Libraries’ requirements for

Highly Desirable: Knowledge of institutional repository platforms  
like Dspace, Fedora, or ProQuest Digital Commons; Knowledge of web  
application frameworks like Java, Ruby on Rails, Tomcat; knowledge of  
humanities technologies and standards such as XML, EAD, TEI and text  
markup; knowledge of computer programming and scripting languages  
such as C, Java, Perl, PHP.

Environment:
Miami University Libraries, Oxford, OH, has a strong tradition of  
public service and of building collections that support the  
university's education and research activities. The Libraries contain  
over 2.5 million volumes, including an extensive collection of  
government documents and microforms, and subscribe to over 13,000  
serials and 100+ electronic databases available via MiamiLINK, the  
library web system. They serve 850 teaching and research faculty,  
16,000 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students. The Libraries have  
46 professionals, 58 support staff, belong to OCLC, CRL, SPARC, and  
are active members of the OhioLINK consortium.

Rank and Benefits:
This is a full-time twelve month appointment at the rank of Assistant  
Librarian. Rank and salary are based upon experience and  
qualifications. Benefits include Blue Cross/Blue Shield, major  
medical, dental and term life insurance. Ohio Public Employees  
Retirement System or alternate Retirement Program (ARP).
