7th ISKO-Spain Conference=20
The human dimension of knowledge organisation=20
Barcelona 6-8 July 2005=20

The focus of the 7th ISKO-Spain Conference is on orienting users of =
systems and=20
applications of information organisation and retrieval in companies, =
public=20
administration, archives and document centres, portals or internet =
services,=20
databases and digital libraries.

Knowledge organization has traditionally been centred on =
representational=20
objects -texts, images and documents in general- or on computer systems =
that=20
facilitate information retrieval. It is ever more apparent that there =
is a=20
need to take into consideration the cognitive, physical, and affective=20
characteristics of different types of people when designing =
applications. =20
Currently, with the availability of personalized systems that facilitate =
the=20
interaction between persons and organisation systems, questions are =
being asked=20
such as:
-How to improve universal access to information?=20
-How to obtain maximum performance from the management of knowledge in=20
organizations?=20
-How to incorporate users into the design cycles of knowledge =
organization=20
systems?=20
-How to respond to differences (social, cultural, etc.) of the users of =
these=20
systems?=20

TOPICS

=B7 Theoretical base of knowledge organization: what it contributes to=20
understanding the context of human perception; linguistic, social and =
cultural=20
bases; and structures for representing knowledge.=20

=B7 Design centred on the user of knowledge organization systems: =
management of=20
content in different systems; usability, personalization, =
interoperability and=20
multilingualism; design models based on artificial intelligence and =
natural=20
language processing; its evaluation.=20

=B7 Users and use of knowledge organization systems: search behaviour =
and the=20
social use of Internet; training and competence in information handling; =

accessibility and the digital divide between different sectors of =
society;=20
detecting needs for accessing web-based contents and electronic training =
for=20
the disabled.=20

=B7 Applications of knowledge organization systems: the market for =
knowledge=20
organization systems; content classification systems (categories and =
taxonomies=20
of web sites); intermediaries, disintermediation and re-intermediation; =
ethical=20
aspects.=20

SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS OF PRESENTATIONS AND POSTERS

Authors have to present an abstract of their work -either oral =
presentations or=20
posters- that will be reviewed by an evaluation committee as to =
timeliness,=20
interest and originality.=20

Abstracts of presentations should be at least 700 words long. They =
should=20
include: title, objectives and the premise of the work, methodology =
followed,=20
conclusions arrived at and, if relevant, references to 3 works used as a =

bibliography. The length foreseen for the presentation, not to exceed 20 =

minutes, should also be indicated.=20

Abstracts of posters should be 500 words long and include titles, =
objectives,=20
conclusions and a formal description of the poster.=20

In all cases the name and address (post and electronic) with the =
contact's=20
telephone should be provided for each presenter.=20

Abstracts should be sent by e-mail in MS Word or another compatible =
format to=20
isko2005@ub.edu. Acceptance of the abstract of a presentation requires =
the=20
tacit commitment that at least one of the authors will be present to =
make the=20
presentation during the congress.=20

The working languages of the conference will be Catalan, Spanish and the =

English although works may be submitted in other languages.=20

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS: 25 OCTOBER 2004=20
