Knowledge Organization Systems: Managing Toward the Future A Joint CENDI/NKOS Workshop Hosted by The National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, MD Thursday, October 22, 2009 - 8:30 am - 4:30 pm CENDI and the Networked Knowledge Organization Systems Working Group are joining together to hold a workshop on Knowledge Organization Systems. It will be hosted by The National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, MD on October 22, 2009 in the Main Reading Room. The workshop will focus on approaches to the management of knowledge organization systems that will support emerging and future requirements and use cases. It will cover aspects such as metadata for terminology and terminology resources, registries, standards, interoperability, collaborative workflows for development and expert review, and management software. The use cases will range from metadata input to search and decision support. The Knowledge Organization Systems will cover a wide range from authority files to formal ontologies. Speakers will represent government, academic and commercial organizations from a variety of disciplines including biomedicine, the environment, and earth science.

NKOS (http://nkos.slis.kent.edu/) is a community of more than 100 practitioners from more than 10 countries who are interested in the use of knowledge organization systems in networked environments. This is the ninth workshop on KOS-related topics sponsored by NKOS in the U.S. since 1998.
CENDI (www.cendi.gov<http://www.cendi.gov/>) is an interagency working group of senior scientific and technical information managers from 13 U.S. federal agencies. CENDI's mission is to help improve the productivity of federal science- and technology-based programs through effective scientific, technical, and related information-support systems.
