~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Washington Doctoral Initiative is a fellowship program that will admit a cohort of four highly qualified students from traditionally underrepresented groups to pursue the PhD. Students must have completed or be in the process of completing a masters degree in library and information science. With a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the iSchool provides fellowships for full time study and further supports students' work through an intense mentoring program. The partnership between the Information School and IMLS is part of a larger effort to diversify the library and information science field.
As a part of a vibrant public university that embodies the difference learning and scholarship can make in communities regionally, nationally and internationally, the iSchool is committed to helping the world's best and brightest reach their potential. The iSchool is the fourth-highest rated information school in the country, according to US News & World Report. Its faculty are among some of the most highly-regarded and prominent in the field of information science. In addition to intensive faculty mentoring for the IMLS doctoral students, the School also offers the opportunity for intensive mentoring and engagement with library leaders in the Puget Sound area.
All PhD students are supported throughout their studies through a combination of mentoring, involvement in research projects with iSchool faculty as principal investigators, and a culture of close collaboration with their peers. The breadth of expertise of doctoral students and faculty supports the School's goal to produce rising academics nimble enough to address a broad range of issues in information science in diverse contexts. The IMLS cohort will benefit from the additional opportunity to go through the PhD program as a highly supported cohort, with a dedicated grad staff assistant for additional support.
