Greetings catalogers, knowledge organizers, and metadata-ers,
If you've ever thought of doing a phd in cataloging, classification,
metadata, or beyond, please take a look at our program. We have a very
strong faculty in the knowledge organization and cataloging area,
including yours truly (anybody interested in cataloging history? FRBR?
OPAC displays of works?), Raya Fidel, Stuart Sutton, Mike Crandall, and
Efthi Efthimiadis.
In addition, we have a an overall strong LIS faculty and orientation.
We have top notch faculty in the design of information technology, HCI,
information management, and information policy areas (to see individual
faculty members research strengths:
http://www.ischool.washington.edu/research/profiles.aspx). We offer
excellent student support. We are in Seattle - what more could you ask
for?
If you have questions, please feel free to contact me or anyone at the
School.
Please circulate widely, and excuse cross-postings.

University of Washington - The Information School - Ph.D. in Information
Science
The Ph.D. in Information Science offered by the Information School of
the University of Washington prepares information scientists who can
develop theories, teach, research, advocate, lead, write, and make
original and meaningful contributions to the information field. Students
in the program learn not only to identify critical problems and
rigorously research their solutions, but also to effectively communicate
those solutions to a broad audience.
Our doctoral students seek theoretical and empirical explanations for
information phenomena from the perspective of an information scientist
and with a human-centered approach - a focus on information and people.
The program comprises coursework, practica, and dissertation components.
The curriculum is organized around three conceptual areas, building upon
the strengths and expertise of our faculty:
* Library and Information Science
* Information Management & Policy
* Design and Information Technology
