[Sigcr-l] FWD: defining classification

 Dear Martin,
library clqssifications of course put certain special constrains on
classification. If used in shelving, each book can only be placed in one
place. In catalogues, however multiple classifications are possible. The
specific kind of system, we are talking about classify in different ways.
Bus that is not, I think, a reason to define classification differently, but
to specify some forms of classification.

kind regards,

Birger

    Dear Birger,

The definition below fits somehow with the definition in Knowledge
    Representation.
To my understanding, library classification systems are narrower:
They try
in
    addition
to define a set of disjoint classes, so that each object can be
uniquely
    assigned to
one most specialized class. So, polyhierarchies and multiple
classifiaction is
    avoided.

    Best,

    Martin
