Eighth International ISKO Conference

Call for papers

The International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) will hold
its 8th International
ISKO Conference (ISKO 8) in London, England, July 13th-16th 2004. The
conference will be
hosted by the School of Library, Archive and Information Studies at
University College London,
Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT.  The theme of the conference is:

Knowledge Organization and the Global Information Society

The keynote address will be delivered by Clifford Lynch, Executive
Director,
Coalition for Networked Information.

Papers addressing Knowledge Organization and the Global Information
Society from any of the
following interrelated perspectives are invited:

7	Global Users and uses of Knowledge Organization

7	Theories of Knowledge and Knowledge Organization: feasibility of
universal solutions

7	Linguistic and cultural approaches to Knowledge Organization:
cross-cultural,
cross-language and multilingual information retrieval

7	Information Policies, Management, Interoperability and Maintenance
of Information
Systems

7	Knowledge Organization in corporate information systems

7	Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Representation

7	Knowledge Organization of Universal and Special Systems

7	Knowledge Organization of non-print information: sound, image ,
multimedia &c.


Academics, practitioners and researchers involved in knowledge
organization are invited
to submit abstracts of between 1500 and 2000 words by September 30th
2003 to Professor
I.C. McIlwaine, Programme Chair (see contact information below).
Abstracts should reflect
 the theme of the conference and each should indicate into which of
the above categories it
 falls.

Submissions for poster sessions are also invited, again reflecting the
above, and an outline
description of the projected format, should be supplied. These should
also be submitted by
September 30th 2003 and relate to the same criteria.

A limited number of small bursaries will be available for students who
submit outstanding
proposals.

An international programme committee will review the abstracts, and
authors will be notified
of decisions by December 1st 2003. The deadline for submission of
papers for the printed conference
 proceedings will be March 1st 2004.

The programme committee reserves the right to judge abstracts as more
appropriate for poster
 sessions in preference to open presentations.

All abstracts should be submitted by e-mail as rtf or plain text files
to isko2004 at ucl.ac.uk by
September 30th 2003. Late submissions will not be eligible for
consideration.
