Dear SIG Chairs:

SIG/STI (Science and Technical Information) is proposing a panel
submission and is currently seeking cosponsors, and possibly
participation in its creation, from other SIGs. The panel organizers
are Jian Qin of Syracuse University and Elisabeth Jones of University
of Washington, and the title is "Best Practices and Strategies for
Data Librarianship." The panel plans to cover best practices and
strategies of people working in this area at academic libraries and
research institutions who have reacted to the e-Science trend by
initiating data repository projects and exploring strategies and
solutions to science data problems. This activity has been called
“data librarianship” which has been used to encompass the effort of
data management and supplying related service to the community. The
panel presentations are expected to cover policies, institutional
relations, planning, technical considerations, staffing, and other
issues that fall under data librarianship's purview.

Based on the brief presentations at the SIG planning meeting in
Columbus, this proposal seemed to fit with SIG MGT, and perhaps it
could be aligned with the item on the SIG-DL WIKI site: "3. Cross-
border data management; interoperable metadata; roles concerning
metadata creation."

If there is interest from these or other SIGs, please respond to me
directly.

Thanks!
John
