[Pasig-discuss] Digital Preservation Report for Small & Mid-size Institutions

The Digital POWRR team (Preserving digital Objects With Restricted R
esources) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) have 
recently published a white paper to provide guidance and analysis of 
digital preservation solutions suitable for small and mid-size 
institutions often faced with small staff sizes, restricted IT 
infrastructures, and tight budgets. 

The white paper entitled “From Theory to Action: “Good Enough” Digital 
Preservation Solutions for Under-Resourced Cultural Heritage Institutions” 
scores available solutions against an evaluative matrix  based on the 
intersection of the Digital Curation Centre’s digital curation lifecycle 
and the OAIS (Open Archival Information System) Reference Model. 

Preservica Cloud Edition scored well against the POWRR team’s Tool Grid, 
addressing all 21 functions for a Digital Preservation solution. 

General recommendations in the Moving Towards the Future section of the 
study outline “that institutions with some financial resources available, 
but do not expect to add personnel should investigate Preservica ….. which 
seems to be the best out-of-the-box solution among the limited products 
tested during the grant period. Preservica requires the lowest learning 
curve and minimal staff-side interventions.”

One reviewer in the report also mentioned that Preservica’s ability to 
gather content via web crawling as especially useful in his/her setting. 
S/he concluded that “this tool went above and beyond my expectations. The 
interface makes following the workflow very easy and manageable…Using this 
tool makes me more confident in my ability to do digital preservation, 
even if I still feel like a novice.”
