The subject of New Mainers resonates with me. We just completed a town-wide read of Elizabeth Strout’s The Burgess Boys, which talks quite a bit about the Somali refugee population in Maine. (The book references actual events that occurred in Lewiston, ME.) For the capstone event, we invited three Muslim Americans to speak about their faith, and they were wonderfully diverse in their responses! You can view the conversation in two parts at:

If you'll be in Portland this weekend for the New England Archivists Spring 2016 Meeting, don’t miss the chance to see Maine Historical Society’s controversial new exhibition exploring immigration in Maine!

Immigration is America's oldest tradition, and along with religious tolerance, what our nation was built upon. The history of immigration in Maine is happening today, and is in constant flux. 400 Years of New Mainers highlights personal stories of immigration through photographer Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest's contemporary portraits of "New Mainers” and original works by street artist Pigeon displayed among items from MHS's permanent collection. The show’s narrative includes the centuries-long history of immigration in Maine.

Also on view is Pigeon's Mainer Project: street art meets history. In this exhibition, the original artwork of Orson Horchler (a.k.a. Pigeon) is combined with current news, historic photographs, manuscripts, and newspapers from Maine Historical Society's collections to provide context to events in our past, to inform our future regarding the often contentious subject of immigration, and to ask, who is a Mainer?
