Identifying and Caring for your Audio-Visual Materials

October 2nd, 2010 - 9:00am to 5:00pm
$220 (Simmons GSLIS Alumni price $175)
PDPs: 7

Please register by September 27th!

This workshop is for archivists and librarians with little to no experience
working with magnetic audio-visual material. The format will be a PowerPoint
presentation mixed with a hands on exercise in identifying a variety of
media that one would typically find in their collection. In this interactive
workshop, students will learn the history of magnetic media, what magnetic
tape is made of, the types of deterioration and what they look like, proper
storage, reformatting options and the emergence of JPEG2000 and the concept
of "The Preservation Factory". The instructor strongly encourages students
to bring examples of magnetic media from their collection if they have
specific questions.

Instructor: James DaMico is the Graphics Project Archivist at the Rhode
Island Historical Society Library (RIHS) where he is surveying and creating
core catalog records of the entire Graphics Collection;
