New England Chapter of the American Society for Indexing
Spring Conference
Saturday, March 21, 2009, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
Worcester State College, 486 Chandler Street, Worcester, MA
North/South Auditorium on the first floor of the Student Center
“Indexing as a Balancing Act”
Presented by Stephen Ingle, President and CEO of WordCo Indexing
Services, Inc.(www.wordco.com)
Steve will focus on the many factors that have to be taken into
consideration by the indexer. These include client specifications, space
limitations, time constraints, audience, and (last but by no means
least) content and style. Does the indexer have to “cut corners” to get
the project done? If so, what gets sacrificed? This presentation should
be of interest to beginning as well as experienced indexers. The second
half of the presentation will be devoted to a question and answer
session with the audience.
Steve Ingle is the president of WordCo Indexing Services, Inc., located
in Norwich, Connecticut. He studied German literature at Yale
University, and has master’s degrees in German and Russian Area Studies
from Washington University and Hunter College, respectively. Following
graduation, he worked for four years as index editor for Germanic and
Scandinavian literatures at the Modern Language Association in New York.
He began his indexing business out of his home in 1988. WordCo now
employs eight people and completes 400-500 projects annually for a
diverse group of clients. He is also president of the Small- and
Home-Office Association of Southeastern Connecticut. Steve presentation
at the 2006 American Society of Indexers conference in Toronto was
entitled: “Getting a Grasp on the Book: A Balanced Approach to Indexing.”
“Creating Web Site Indexes” Workshop
Presented by Heather Hedden, Principal of Hedden Information Management
(www.hedden-information.com)
In this four-hour workshop, Heather will instruct participants on how to
create hyperlinked back-of-the-book style indexes on web sites or
intranets. Indexing techniques, design best practices, and software
tools for web site indexing will be covered. A review of HTML codes will
be provided, so participants with no prior experience with HTML can
attend this workshop. Indexing experience also is not necessary, but a
basic familiarity with the concepts of indexes is an advantage. This
half-day workshop, based on Heather's online workshops, has also been
presented at the ASI national conferences in Toronto (2006) and
Philadelphia (2007). Workshop details are available at:

Science. She has published numerous articles on web site indexing and
