Creating a Successful Open Access Publication
Online: October 1 - 31, 2008
Cost: $250 (Simmons GSLIS Alums $200)
PDPs: 15

Do you feel frustrated when trying to create an online open-access
publication? Are you wondering how you can attract prospective users and
how you can create and maintain wiki content? What is the best license
for your publication and what considerations should be made when
choosing one? How should your press release look and where can you
advertise your publication? Which factors help decide if your
publication is successful or not?

The workshop is based on the experience collected during the creation of
the Open Access Directory – a wiki that provides factual lists about
open access to science. Taught by the manager of the OAD project --
launched by professors Peter Suber and Robin Peek -- the workshop will
examine all the subject matter that one would need to know as a project
manager for an online, open-access publication.

Every week the class will explore different components required for
creating and managing an online publication and will have a wiki where
students can collaborate, practice, and create content for every step of
the workshop. The participants of this workshop are welcome to create
content based on their interests.

/Faculty: Athanasia (Nancy) Pontika is a Doctoral Student at the
