** Please excuse cross posting **

We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Blackford Middleton will be the
keynote speaker at KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY: MOVING
FORWARD, SUSTAINING THE MOMENTUM, ASIST's KM Summit 11/16/2002.

Dr. Middleton will discuss the knowledge management innovations at Partners
Healthcare. Partners' system is detailed in the July 2002 Harvard Business
Review ("Just-in-Time Delivery Comes to Knowledge Management"), and
incorporates some truly interesting KM techniques. One is to "'bake'
specialized knowledge into the jobs of highly skilled workers" to make it
"so readily accessible that it can't be avoided." Another is the key
involvement of experts in developing and contributing knowledge to a system
that is truly a life-and-death application. The sophisticated nature of
this KM initiative will make this talk high-value to both practitioners and
students.

Please join us in Philadelphia for this exciting one-day Summit. We're
priviledged to offer you a strong agenda with very interesting speakers and
topics. The full announcement follows.

Knowledge Management in the 21st Century: Moving Forward, Sustaining the
Momentum
Saturday, November 16, with Kick-off Reception Friday evening, November 15

The American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) 2002
Knowledge Management Summit views KM from the perspective of mature reality
rather than just another promising blip on the "good idea" radar screen. We
will look at KM in today's organization and determine where it stands - as
an urgent flashpoint, or integrated into the fabric of the organization as a
given. It is in "stealth mode" - alive but renamed for the 21st century?
Are you doing it every day? The summit will report on the current KM buzz.

Join us in Philadelphia and DO knowledge management throughout the day with
fellow practitioners. The 2002 KM Summit will be your opportunity to
exchange best practices with those who have been there for years and have
exciting news to share. We'll explore KM roles within organizations such as
Bain, the World Bank, Genzyme Corporation and The Pew Charitable Trusts.
We'll look at the state-of-the-art in collaboration research and technology
(Patti Anklam will discuss social network analysis and Diane Sonnenwald
shares her research on collaboratories), the tools that KM practitioners are
using (guided by Joseph Busch), and what issues are on the KM horizon, with
Neena Buck of Common Knowledge Cambridge, Michael Zack of Northeastern
University's Knowledge Management program, Peter Engstrom of SAIC, and
Claire McInerney from Rutgers. And in the spirit of really doing KM, Stan
Ward will facilitate knowledge sharing throughout the Summit.
