Nermien A. Al-Ali, L.L.B. and L.L.M.
Research Professor at Franklin Pierce Law Center, Concord, NHProfessor
Al-Ali has many years of practice as a business transactional lawyer. She
was formerly the Managing Attorney of the IP Department of Ibrachy &
Dermarker, an international business law firm in Cairo. She is currently
committed to research in the field of Intellectual Capital Management
including teaching a course on the 'management of intellectual capital of an
organization from A- to Z.'

Mark Williams
Manager, Messaging Middleware and Workstation Architecture, at Monsanto,
St. Louis, MOMr. Williams was formerly the Director, Library Services. He
began his career at Monsanto as a biochemist, then, as a heavy computer and
information user, began working with the R & D corporate computer group. He
eventually assumed management over both the computer group and library,
returning in 2001 to a purely IT management role.

Attorney Al-Ali will outline and explain knowledge management as it pertains
to ideas, innovation process, research, and intellectual property rights of
an organization. She will speak from the perspective of an attorney who has
worked with and for some of the world's largest corporations. Mr. Williams
will describe, from first-hand experience, managing intellectual property
assets within the corporation. His presentation will tell about the
separation of proprietary materials, managed by the library, in conjunction
with the spin-off of Monsanto's chemical business during 1996-1998.

Best Practices: Afternoon Roundtables

After lunch, you will join a group chaired by a chapter member leader who
will guide a discussion of intellectual property management best practices
contributed by other special librarians. Through a 90-minute workshop
discussion, each group will develop corollaries and other useful commentary
on the best practice ideas gathered before the meeting. Their leaders in a
concluding panel presentation will share the results of discussions with all
meeting attendees.
