Library Technician

Employment Conditions: temporary full-time
Salary Range: $14,61-$20.31 hourly
Purpose
The Dept. of Natural Resources has a temporary position for a library technician/cataloger to provide original and copy cataloging of monographic and serial materials in all formats, with tasks also including cataloging problems corrections, journal holdings updating, de-accessing catalog records for withdrawn materials, and other tasks to bring the library infrastructure up-to-date. Catalog discovery tools will be reviewed and possibly implemented. The candidate will work with the DNR librarian, library volunteers, DNR library users (primarily DNR employees) and an evolving Collection Management Policy for guidance in this project.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Cataloging
1. Review un-cataloged materials for inclusion in DNR library collections, using evolving collection development policy.
2. Determine whether materials are in the DNR catalog, need copy cataloging or original cataloging, or other special access considerations
3. For newly purchased materials, materials donated to the library, and DNR-produced publications that will be in the DNR Library collection, search for MARC and catalog records that can be used for copy cataloging; perform cataloging following OCLC procedures in OCLC Connexion, export records to Aleph, creating holding and item records
4. Process items for shelving and circulation (labels, pockets, cards)
5. Identify and solve cataloging problems such as monograph/serial options, materials that could be classified together for better browsing, missing item or holding records, etc.
6. Develop guide sheet for this process (or improve on the one that exists).
Weeding the Collection
1. Remove from the catalog, records (bibliographic, holding, item) for materials withdrawn from the collection
2. Create a list in Microsoft Excel of withdrawn materials and donated materials not entered into the collection for proper disposal.
Journal Holdings
1. Update the journal holdings database in Microsoft Access that includes an up-to-date record for each journal subscription, donated journals, including source, routing, print/online, , url, subscription authentication method, retention and location (per fields in the Access database, or adding ones that improve access and holdings records)
2. Validate that online access subscriptions are accessible for subscribed years, and if not, problem solve, with vendor/publisher/MIS network staff.
3. Update holdings in Worldcat Link Manager
4. Develop guide sheet for the journal holdings/Access database/ Link Manger workflow

5. Work with DNR librarian, DNR staff and Web team, to update/rework the library Intranet page contents and layout, incorporating effective discovery and social networking tools, to optimize access to the collection and journal holdings for DNR employees.
Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Experience: Cataloging Experience: 2 years original and copy cataloging, including serials and electronic resources required;
Library Experience: 2 year(s) required;
Other Requirements:
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree; two years of full-time (or equivalent) original cataloging and copy cataloging experience, using MARC formats, AACR2 and Library of Congress (LC) Rule interpretations, LC Classification, and LC Subject Headings; experience cataloging on OCLC Connexion and in an integrated library system (Aleph is desirable).
Highly Desirable Qualifications: MLS degree, a working knowledge of the Aleph integrated library system as it applies to the MnPALS consortium, OCLC Connexion software, as well as Microsoft Access database and Microsoft Excel software. Experience cataloging natural resource, environmental and/or government materials.
Experience with digital archive collections, library web design, especially discovery and social media tools.
Employment Condition
40 hours per week
Salary Range: $14.61-$20.31
