And Now for Something Completely Different" brain food sampler series from
ASIS&T
Tuesday October 11th 5:00-6:30
Introduction to Global Positioning System equipment, both recreational AND
scientific, by REI (the camping, hiking folks).
REI expert staff will give this informative clinic on the basics of choosing
and using GPS technology to aid you in understanding this powerful handheld
navigation system. The clinic will also cover GPS compatible mapping
software.
GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which pinpoints locations on land
and sea using a network of 24 orbiting satellites built by the United States
Department of Defense. Originally intended as a navigational aid for the US
military, GPS technology is now used for everything from tracking ships on
the ocean to helping backpackers find their favorite campsites, and can be
found factory-built directly into cars, watches, two-way radios, PDAs and
more. Open access to GPS caused the immediate invention, via the Internet,
of Geocaching, a new hobby which mixes outdoor activity, technical gadgets,
meeting new folks, geography, internet maps and other wonderful gadgetry.
Please note we have changed the venue to the College of St. Catherine,
Centers for Excellence, 2nd floor of the Coeur de Catherine.
The entrance to the parking lot is off Fairview Ave just beyond Randolph.
(Parking should be pretty good as the meeting is scheduled between day and
evening classes.)
The goal of our speaker series is to showcase different information-related
jobs and topics. The target audience is twofold: folks who are scoping out
potential careers and folks who want to stay up on things in case someone at
work asks and/or they are expected to become (or know) an expert in a given
area.
The format is informal, roundtable discussion. We will ask each speaker to
spend 30 minutes. Then we'll open it up for questions from attendees.
