*****************************
The Freeman Lecture series is a public-private partnership created by the
University of Minnesota and the Freeman Forum to honor and carry on the work
of former Minnesota Governor and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Orville
Freeman, who died two years ago.
Freeman, a decorated World War II veteran and University of Minnesota
alumnus who served as Governor from 1955 to 1960, was instrumental in moving
Minnesota forward as a progressive, nation-leading state that wisely
invested in education, conservation and the environment, transportation,
health and human services and community and business development. He was one
of the nation's longest serving Secretaries of Agriculture, under Presidents
John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. He helped create many of the programs we
take for granted today, including advancements in food safety and
inspection, food stamps, WIC and school breakfast, and international food
for peace and agricultural market development.
About Dr. Serageldin
Dr. Serageldin, Director, Library of Alexandria, also chairs the Boards of
Directors for each of affiliated research institutes and museums and is
Distinguished Professor at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He has
served in a number of capacities at the World Bank, including as Vice
President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development
(1992-1998), and for Special Programs (1998-2000). He has published over 50
books and monographs and over 200 papers on a variety of topics including
biotechnology, rural development, sustainability, and the value of science
to society. He is a graduate of Harvard University (masters and doctorate
degrees).
The Ancient Library of Alexandria, founded in 288 BC, was a unique
achievement of the human intellect. It represented the zenith of learning
for over six centuries, and remains to this day the inspiration for all
scholars and scientists, even though it disappeared some 1600 years ago. The
Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the New Library of Alexandria, is dedicated to
recapture the spirit of the original.
