AUGUST 9, 2005 VIRTUAL LEARNING SERIES - PART I

INFORMATION ETHICS

Introduction to Information Ethics, Libraries, and Professional Ethics

Description
Information professionals are facing tremendous ethical challenges in
the workplace. From first amendment and privacy issues to the Patriot
Act, to new copyright laws and licensing agreements, information ethics
is fast becoming a critical area of attention for all LIS professionals.
Armed with an understanding of basic information ethics theories and
practical professional ethics skills, information professionals will be
better poised to handle ethical dilemmas when they arise in their
library or information center.

While participants are encouraged to take both sessions (Session 1:
Introduction to Information Ethics, Libraries, and Professional Ethics
and Session 2: Issues in Information Ethics), they can be taken
individually. Session 1 will enable information professionals to
understand a basic philosophical approach to information ethics and
professional ethics as they pertain to the information professions; in
addition, participants will be introduced to codes of ethics and ethical
decision making. Session 2 will introduce specific ethical issues facing
the profession today, and will include a significant discussion
component so that participants can hear of ethical challenges and issues
and how their peers are handling them. A diversity of special libraries
and information setting issues will be discussed among the participants.
