July 20, 2005 Virtual Learning Series Part II
Digital Collaboration Projects for Information Professionals
Part II
Launching a Digital Collaboration Project
July 20, 2005
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm ET
Description
Whatever you call it digital collaboration, social software, social
networking working across the Web is about more than technology or
devices. Ultimately, it is about developing a community of practice where
people readily share their information and knowledge, regardless of distance.
Many clients and end-users will suggest that the trend toward using digital
collaboration lessens the need for librarians and other information
professionals. Instead, the opposite is true: online information sharing
increases the need for librarians as facilitators, researchers, and
knowledge managers. With some work and initiative, technology-savvy Info
Pros can position themselves inside their organizations as critically
important team members at a time when their value is being questioned.
This two-part series looks at the tools and issues involved in creating an
effective digital collaboration environment, and shares some ideas on how
best to establish a digital collaboration initiative within an
organization. At the end of the series, viewers should have a strong
understanding of what digital collaboration is, how organizations are using
digital collaboration tools, and how information professionals can leverage
their unique skills in digital collaboration projects to become invaluable
members of their organizations.
Part II - Launching a Digital Collaboration Project
The second session builds on the first session and discusses how digital
collaboration projects are launched, and the important roles information
professionals play in successfully launching and maintaining these
projects, including:
· Assessing whether your organization is ready for a digital collaboration
project;
· Assembling the project team and winning stakeholder support;
· Determining which of the digital collaboration tools are worth
implementing in your organization; and
· Calculate a return-on-investment when hard figures may be difficult to
compile.
