Subject: Questions about the Semantic Web?
Dear Colleagues,
Terry Seale of Dorsey & Whitney has volunteered to host a conference call
presentation. The guest speaker is Jim Hendler, who will answer your
questions about the Semantic Web. For more information see the description
below, or the Wiki site at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2005_08_11
The call is scheduled for 12:30-2:30 CST (may get our earlier).
If you are interested in attending, please let Terry know by Aug 9, 2005, so
he can reserve a large enough room. Questions? Please feel free to contact
either me or Terry.
Also, since the timing is right at the lunch hour, it will be a brown bag
lunch, but the firm will provide beverages, and West will provide dessert.

*Semantic Web Q & A*
by Jim Hendler
*Abstract*:
The Ontolog community has heard many presentations touching on
what the Semantic Web is, how it interacts with ontology
development and/or web services, and what semantics might offer.
By now, you must have questions you want answered about the hows
and whys of RDF, OWL, and the emerging Semantic Web Rules and
Services areas. Rather than an organized talk, I will put myself
at your disposal to answer questions about what these
technologies are, how they can be used, and where they'll go
next. So come and ask, and I'll do my best to answer.
*About the Speakers:*
*Jim Hendler* is a Professor at the University of Maryland and
the Director of the Joint Institute for Knowledge Discovery at
the University of Maryland. He has joint appointments in the
Department of Computer Science, the Institute for Advanced
Computer Studies and is an affiliate of the Institute for Systems
Research. He has authored about 200 technical papers in the areas
of artificial intelligence, Semantic Web, agent-based computing
and high performance processing. One of the inventors of the
"Semantic Web," Hendler was the recipient of a 1995 Fulbright
Foundation Fellowship, is a former member of the US Air Force
Science Advisory Board, and is a Fellow of the American
Association for Artificial Intelligence. He is also the former
Chief Scientist of the Information Systems Office at the US
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), was awarded a
US Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Medal in 2002, and is a
member of the World Wide Web Consortium's Semantic Web
Coordination Group. He is the Editor in Chief of IEEE Intelligent
Systems and is on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science.
