Position Vacancy
APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT II

Position Description: This position provides application support and 
development for central library systems, including several commercial 
applications and numerous locally developed solutions. The incumbent will 
be responsible for the implementation, development, and support of numerous 
server-based applications running primarily on Windows and Solaris 
operating systems, with backend technologies that include Microsoft SQL, 
MySQL, and Oracle. The level of support varies among the applications and 
includes installing and configuring vended software, providing third-tier 
user support, creating functional and technical specifications for local 
development, recommending programmatic solutions, modifying and writing 
program code, writing documentation and documenting program modifications, 
and providing backup system administration support. This position provides 
second-tier support to library technical services and public services staff 
who maintain the data and identify local development needs. Third-tier 
support is provided to students, faculty, and other library patrons. The 
incumbent will have regular contact with several library vendors and 
information providers and will serve as a liaison between library staff and 
system vendors. This position is in the University Libraries' Information 
Systems Support Team and reports to the Coordinator of Information Systems 
and Technology. Some travel for conferences and training and occasional 
evening or weekend support may be required.

Qualifications:
Required: A bachelor's degree and 3-5 years experience in applications 
development, or an equivalent combination of education and related 
experience; excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated 
problem-solving and organizational skills; knowledge of programming 
concepts and demonstrated competency in one or more scripting or 
programming languages including perl; knowledge of database modeling and 
design; demonstrated knowledge of HTML and JavaScript; ability to learn new 
software applications quickly; skill in providing customer support.

Desired: Experience in library systems applications including SFX and/or 
MetaLib; experience with web server applications including IIS and/or 
apache; database experience with MS SQL, MySQL, and/or Oracle; familiarity 
with ASP and .NET; web server administration experience; experience with 
server operating systems including Windows Server 2003 and/or Solaris; 
general understanding of the mission and functions of a research library 
and the information needs of academic users; demonstrated interest in 
professional development.

Salary and appointment: Appointment will be made at the Application 
Development and Support II (Pay Grade 9) level. The salary range is $37,608 
- $40,000. The University of Iowa offers an attractive package of benefits

Libraries' integrated online system, uses ExLibris' Aleph 500 
software.  The Libraries has been innovative in the development of services 
related to digital technologies with the creation of such units as the 
Information Arcade and Information Commons. The University Libraries is an 
active member of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), the Committee 
on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Center for Research Libraries 
(CRL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Coalition for 
Networked Information (CNI), and the ARL SPARC Project.  The Libraries 
provides a program of support for professional development activities and 
its staff members are actively engaged in national cooperative efforts.

The University and Iowa City: A major research and teaching institution,

otolaryngology to fiction writing, printmaking to space science, hydraulic 
engineering to dance. The University consists of a faculty of 2000 and a
