The MINERVA 2004 Symposium offers an engaging program on Intellectual
Property and Digital Image Collections.
The morning program will be held in the Mississippi Room of the Coffman
Union, on the east bank of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus,
from 8:30 a.m. - noon. For
directions: http://www.coffman.umn.edu/directions.php
The afternoon Town Hall Meeting will be held at the Hilton Hotel,
Minneapolis, Minnesota from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Reception follows from 5-7:00
p.m. This is a special joint program between MINERVA '04 and the Museum
Computer Network (MCN).
As visual resources are being digitized to preserve collections, enhance
education and research, and promote visual data, intellectual property
becomes a topic of foremost interest. Copyright standards and practices for
the usage, design, and preservation of digital image resources demands
critical attention of collection managers, creators, curators and users.
In its fourth year, MINERVA '04 welcomes three nationally recognized guest
speakers to discuss the latest trends, issues, and responsibilities
associated with copyright and digital collections:
* Allan Kohl, Art Historian, Visual Resources Librarian, Minneapolis
College of Art & Design
* Eric Celeste, Associate University Librarian for Information
Technology, University of Minnesota
* Amalyah Keshet, Head of Image Resources & Copyright Management, The
Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
The MCN/MINERVA '04 Town Hall Meeting presents keynote speaker, Glen Otis
Brown, Executive Director of Creative Commons since Summer 2002. Brown will
discuss the concepts behind the Creative Commons and its innovative
approaches to the marketing and distribution of intellectual works, in both
the private and public spheres, and articulate the intent of the non-profit
licensing model and how it serves to expand the notion of intellectual
property rights. Brown will further elaborate on how the Creative Commons
serves an easy yet reliable way to gain exposure and widespread
distribution, and specify how the licensing structure may be useful to
academics and the academic institution, entrepreneurs, non-profit
organizations, and artists.
Special guest, Diane M. Zorich, Museum Information Management Consultant
will moderate a panel in response to Brown's presentation. Panel
respondents will include Alan Newman, Chief, Division of Imaging & Visual
Services, National Gallery of Art, and MINERVA '04 presenters Alan Kohl,
Eric Celeste, and Amalyah Keshet.
Research professionals from Minnesota libraries, museums, historical
centers, academic and other private or public research institutions,
artists, teachers, and students are encouraged to attend.
