Agenda:
9:30 - 10:00 AM Registration

10:00 - 11:30 AM Keynote Speaker, Keynote Reactor Panel & Questions:
Academic Library Values. Ken Frazier, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

11:30 - 12:15 PM Poster Sessions

12:15 - 1:00 PM Lunch

1:00 - 2:00 PM Breakout Session I (choose between A & B):
A. Has Your Reference Collection Gone Virtual? Collecting and Promoting Your
Reference Collection in 2004
As more traditional reference materials are available in electronic format,
questions arise: Are they worth the price? Should we focus on e-resources
and shrink the size of our print collection? How will users know that we
have them? Hear a panel address these issues, and join in the discussion.

B. We Can Play Well Together: Collection Development & Collaboration
Between Librarians, Faculty and Students
This two person panel (including a librarian from a small college, and a
large university) will discuss the challenges and rewards of building an
academic library collection in collaboration with faculty and students.
What's the right level of collaboration between librarians, faculty and
students in determining the growth of the collection? How might faculty or
librarian culture, cost of resources, and growth of new academic programs
affect this? How much say, if any, do faculty get in spending library
budgets? Does this help or hinder the collaboration process? Can librarians
use collection development as an outreach tool for faculty and students? If
so, how? If not, why? How are materials chosen in a collaborative
environment? Does format matter? Are students' voices heard? Is their input
significant to this process? How is progress assessed? In what ways can the
library liaison or subject specialist increase collaboration?

2:00 - 2:30 PM Break

2:30 - 3:30 PM Breakout Session II (choose between C & D):
C. Collaboration & Collection Development in Print & Electronic Environments
Libraries have long collaborated in many areas: cataloging, resource
sharing, consortial purchasing of electronic resources, sharing handouts,
ideas and more. With tight budgets and a delivery infrastructure in place,
libraries are investigating collaborating in the area of print resources.
What are the implications and considerations? Who purchases what? Who
already has what? Come find out how Carleton College, Macalester College
and St. Olaf College are engaging in collaborative collection development.

D. The Googlization of Library Values
The thesis of this session is that library values are related to the
library environment, and that as the environment changes it will impinge
upon library values. Perhaps the apotheosis of this new environment is
Google, the search engine extraordinaire. And so we can talk of a
Googlization of library values. We will explore the good, the bad, and the
just plain ugly implications of this, with a view to thinking about what
library values are and where they come from.

The cost is $45 for ARLD members and non-members. The price includes both
lunch and refreshments.
