MN Chapter of SLA is pleased to have copyright expert Ruth Dukelow
presenting our 2004 continuing education program
Copyright in the Digital Age
Ruth received her MSLS from The Catholic University of America and her JD
from Duke University School of Law. She is the author of the book The
Library Copyright Guide (Association for Educational Communications and
Technology, 1992).
The seminar with include valuable information for special librarians working
in both non-profit and corporate settings. The following will be covered in
the session:
1. U.S. Copyright Law background (US Constitution, Copyright Revision Act of
1976, Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, Copyright Term Extension Act
of 1998 & Eldred decision)
2. Copyright Basics (what is and is not protected by copyright, when
copyright goes into effect, duration of copyright)
3. Copyright Owners' Exclusive Rights under Section 106
4. Exceptions to the Exclusive Rights (Section 107 Fair Use, Section 108
Libraries and Archives, Section 110 Public Performance and Public Display;
application of these exceptions to nonprofit libraries and the exclusion of
many for-profit libraries from the benefits of these exceptions, Texaco
case)
5. Digital Copyright Issues (email and copyright; web pages and copyright,
including linking, metatags, and digitization projects for library or
corporate web sites; limitation on liability for internet service providers)
