PRESS RELEASE
The Minneapolis Athenaeum

"A Tale of a Library and its City"

[August 20, 2002. Minneapolis, Minnesota] Were there libraries before
public libraries? What is a subscription or membership library? How much
would you pay for the privilege of checking out books? What do The
Athenaeum and the Minneapolis Public Library have in common?

In his presentation, Dr. Juncker will explore The Athenaeum's early
association with the growing frontier town of Minneapolis and the roots of
what was to become a thriving book community. In answering these and many
other questions, he will cover the first 100 years of The Minneapolis
Athenaeum, up to more recent developments.

David Juncker has degrees from MIT, Cambridge, Mass., and the University of
Minnesota. Since 1980, his organization, Field Associates, has involved him
in research, development, management and planning in the Twin Cities.
Medtronic, Inc., University of Minnesota, United Nations Association,
Science Museum of Minnesota and the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, South Dakota,
are but a few of the organizations he has worked with. He is the author of
dozens of articles dealing with life sciences, multilateral studies,
management and leadership education, and corporate and non-profit management
issues. He has been active with the Minnesota Scholars Forum and has served
on The Athenaeum board of directors since 1997.

Who should attend? If you are interested in early history of the city of
Minneapolis and in the early book culture of the region, please join us
Thursday, September 19, beginning at 7:00 p.m., at the Open Book, 1011
Washington Avenue South, Minneapolis

The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the
lecture.
