From swarwick at sprynet.com Mon Jul 12 02:40:21 2004 From: swarwick at sprynet.com (Shelly Warwick) Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 02:40:21 -0400 Subject: [Metro-ny_asist] Report May 24th Meeting - upcoming programs Message-ID: <410-22004711264021435@sprynet.com> Please excuse my long silence, but a number of things seemed to pile up right after our re-organizational meeting on May 24th. Looking for my notes we have 15 people in attendance, including some students from Linda?s class. We went around and brain stormed some ideas for possible meetings topics, and, if I read my note correctly (don't ask about my handwriting) some of the ideas included: A meeting on publishing One or more joint meetings with NJ ASIS&T Knowledge organization The New York City information infrastructure Public Health Info ? bio terrorist information Department of Homeland Security ? and policies of fear A site visit to the 311 phone service and a view of its structure Information Architecture ? some show and tell and now to write heuristics, and issues in IA A series for/of IA specialist s on such areas of taxonomy, users, user information IA ? how-tos The relationship between IA and LIS New IA Tools Anthropomorphism of information (I?m note sure I?m reading this right) Human Computer Interaction J-Stor Open Access and Scholarly publishing E-journals and peer review - issues Copyright Disaster Recovery of lost information New Search Engine ? algorithms OCLC Google Book publication on demand History of Libraries Clay Shakey ? Futurist Internet Archives ? Way Back Machine National Centre for Library Statistics ? Tom Mulland?? Broadcast and media issues ? Site visit to media libraries/studios Archiveal footage Sports information ? broadcast / Digital libraries Classification research Educational for LIS Arts & Humannites After some discussion we decided to work on three programs. 1) Linda Cooper & myself are going to organize a networking/social event for the chapter in early Fall. Food and drink (soft & wine) compliments of the chapter. Perhaps some entertainment. Suggestions for interesting venues appreciated. Jonathan (I believe, again my handwriting) will be looking into organizing a program dealing with IA I?m seeking to organize a program on LIS education and am awaiting a response from Michael Gorman as to whether he is available to speak on the topic. If he can, we will pretty much have to go with whatever date he is available, though I?ve asked for a Friday afternoon, since I figure this would be a half day event. If you have any ideas for programs that you would like to work on, or want to help out with the social or LIS education event please let me know. We will also need to elect officers. Volunteers are welcome, so let me know if you would like to serve as president, secretary, treasurer, communications officer, etc. Again, my apologies for the delay in getting this out to you, and looking forward to some great meetings this year!
