[Lacasis-l] LACASIS&T: Make Your Chapter Great!

Hi Everyone,

Professional organizations, such as the Los Angeles Chapter of the American
Society for Information Science and Technology (LACASIS&T), continue to
provide informative programs, awards, services, and networking
opportunities.

As you know, tough economic times, organizational restructuring, and
retirements have meant fewer members for LACASIS&T and other professional
organizations.  Our membership is about one third of what it was ten years
ago.  The result has been fewer active members to support the same
activities and less financial support since chapter rebates are based on
membership.  Despite all this so-called doom and gloom, LACASIS&T continues
to excel.  This year we won the ASIS&T Chapter of the Year, Chapter
Publication, and Chapter Event Awards.  However, we continue to have a hard
time recruiting people for chapter leadership positions, engaging members in
program planning, and supporting services to the membership.

To recapture some of this lost momentum and member participation, LACASIS&T
hopes to focus on re-energizing the chapter and developing future leaders to
ensure that we are poised to provide quality programs and services to our
members in the years to come.  To do so, we have identified core activities
and services for the year, set planning meetings, and broken apart
traditional board duties to accomplish these goals.

2010/2011 LACASIS&T Goals:

   - Represent the chapter at the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA
   - Hold an informal dinner at ASIS&T Annual Meeting
   - Hold Elections for 2010/2011 Officers
   - Hold the Joint Holiday Program with the SLA Southern California Chapter
   - Award the LACASIS&T Contributions to Information Science and Technology
   Award
   - Present the Contributions to Information Science and Technology Award
   in late February
   - Hold an informational program and networking
   - Award the LACASIS&T McKinley Scholarship
   - Apply for a least one chapter award: Publication, Event, Member,
   Innovation
   - Complete our Annual Report for ASIS&T & Apply for the Chapter of the
   Year Award
   - Hold Elections for 2011/2012 Officers


Let us know how you could help:

   - I will attend the informal dinner at ASIS&T Annual (Tuesday)
   - I could organize and run 6-8 planning meetings
   - I would like to know more about running for office
   - I could chair the Contributions to Information Science and Technology
   Committee
   - I could be a member of the Contributions to Information Science and
   Technology Committee
   - I could help plan a program
   - I could write the annual report
   - I could complete a chapter award application
   - I have an idea for something else I can help with

year off sooner than later so contact us *by October 31*. Our next board
meeting will be on November 6, 2010 at 9:30 am, at the NBC Seafood
