This week on the blog, I've done a comparative analysis to assess the coverage of 1findr against that of Dimensions by Digital Science. These two platforms represent a new approach to collecting and collating bibliographic data. Stacked up against each other, the major difference seems to be in the volume of open access material, but there are also interesting findings about document types and coverage over time-we're talking centuries, not just years or decades. A SPECIAL ISSUE OF EDUCATION FOR INFORMATION ON Non-textual pedagogies: Learning beyond words https://www.iospress.nl/journal/education-for-information/ In recent years, researchers and practitioners in the information and communication disciplines have begun to recognize forms of knowledge that go beyond the textual. Concomitantly, new approaches and methodologies to pedagogy have emerged, such as embodied, arts-informed, design thinking, practice-led, experience-based and productive teaching and learning. As such, there is an opportunity to continue incorporating these developments into education for the information professions. Building on the 2016 special issue of Education for Information on innovative pedagogies in LIS (volume 32, issue 1), we invite broad-ranging considerations of questions around educating future information professionals beyond the use of texts. With this in mind, Education for Information is seeking articles for a special issue on Non-Textual Pedagogies to be published in fall/winter 2018. We welcome both conceptual and empirical papers (approximately 6,000 words) as well as shorter discussions of pedagogical innovations and applied practice (approximately 1,500 words). Submissions should be original works not previously published nor undergoing review for publication in another journal at the time of submission. The scope of this special issue includes: Explorations of pedagogies that go beyond traditional textual and verbal approaches in information studies and other fields (including but not limited to embodied, arts-informed, design thinking, practice-led, experience-based, productive teaching and more) Perspectives of teachers, learners, administration, staff, practitioners and more from anywhere in the world Techniques and research on using modalities beyond the visual to teach information studies content Theoretical and methodological approaches to pedagogy and curriculum design that are underrepresented in the information studies literature Discussions of institutional support and student reception of such pedagogical approaches Evidence of the effects of non-textual pedagogical approaches after graduation Reflections on the impact and effectiveness of nontraditional pedagogies Thoughtful use of new technologies for non-textual teaching and learning Uses of ?old? technologies, both innovative and tried-and-true, for non-textual teaching and learning Intersections between course content and other department/institution offerings (reading groups, research centers, seminar series, organizations, institutes and more) This special issue is co-edited by Kiersten F. Latham (Kent State University, USA) and Tim Gorichanaz (Drexel University, USA). Questions, comments and inquiries can be directed to either Kiersten (kflatham at kent.edu) or Tim (gorichanaz at drexel.edu). Style guidelines for Education for Information are available here: http://www.iospress.nl/journal/education-for-information/?tab=submission-of-manuscripts Submissions are due May 31 2018. They can be submitted via email to either Kiersten (kflatham at kent.edu) or Tim (gorichanaz at drexel.edu. Submissions will be blind peer-reviewed. The ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (SIGAPP) is the sole sponsor of SAC. The conference proceedings are published by ACM and are also available online through ACM's Digital Library. SAC is based on a flexible structure of mostly self-contained and self-managed tracks. Over the past years SAC hosted tracks on a variety of timely topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Computer Security, Database Technology, Data Mining, Embedded Systems, Evolutionary Computing, Distributed Systems and Grid Computing, Mobile Computing, Programming Languages, Software Engineering, and Web Technologies. SAC 2018 included 40 tracks that attracted 931 paper submissions from 50 countries; 235 submissions were finally accepted as full papers (25% acceptance rate). More information on past SAC events can be found at http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=Z29vZ2xlZ3JvdXBzLmNvbSAsCQkJZXVyY2hhcEBhc2lzLm9yZwlUaGUgMzR0aCBBQ00gU3ltcG9zaXVtIG9uIEFwcGxpZWQgQ29tcHV0aW5nIChTQUMgMjAxOSk6IENhbGwgZm9yIFRyYWNrIFByb3Bvc2FscwkxODkJTGlzdHMJMTYwCWNsaWNrCXllcwlubw==&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sigapp.org%2Fconferences%2Fsac . The 34th Annual SAC meeting will be held in April 2019 in Limassol, Cyprus, and is hosted by the University of Cyprus. The conference Organizing Committee solicits proposals for organizing and hosting tracks. Prospective track chairs should submit an up to two-page description for organizing a track, which should include at least the following items: 1) The proposed title for the track with a description of its aims, topics it will cover, and rationale for having such a track in SAC. This rationale should refer to any related conference events that are held regularly and why the proposed track differs from them or complements them. The proposed track should not be overly general but also not overly specialized, thus being able to attract a wide audience of people sharing similar interests. Proposals from industry are also encouraged. Despite its name, SAC also welcomes topics of mostly theoretical nature, provided there is clear practical potential in applying the results of such work. 2) A short description of the activities the track chair(s) will undertake upon acceptance of the proposal, to disseminate the call-for-papers for the track, and to manage the review process. (Current Track Chairs guideline document is posted on the SAC 2019 website). 3) A short CV of the prospective track chair(s) with reference to research interests and publication record directly related to the themes of the proposed track, and any previous experience of involvement in the organization of similar events (in the interest of brevity, reference to a personal web page where such information can be found will be sufficient). All proposals will be reviewed by the Program Committee using the criteria described above. The Committee reserves the right to: (1) accept a proposal as is, (2) require modifications before acceptance, (3) recommend merging of similar proposals with a considerable overlap in the topics addressed (in this case the track chairs of the different proposals will be asked to form a single track), (4) reject a proposal. Upon acceptance of a proposal, the track chairs will be notified of their responsibilities in managing the affairs of their track; as such responsibilities are defined by both the ACM and SAC conference rules. The Committee reserves the rights to cancel a track at any time if these responsibilities are not addressed adequately by the track chair(s). Research Impact Value and LIS (RIVAL) #lis_rival All interested in library and information science (LIS) research are invited to register free of charge for a community event on the theme of LIS research impact and value to held in Edinburgh on Wednesday 11th July 2018. Entitled Research Impact Value and LIS (RIVAL), this event will bring together members of three main groups ? creators, users, and end-user beneficiaries of LIS research output ? to explore concepts and examples of the impact and value of LIS research to services delivery in practice. The format of the day will encourage the strengthening of links between these interacting communities, narrow gaps between LIS research and practice, and lay the ground for future research-related support and collaborations across the sector. All are welcome to join the conversation: users of library and information services; library and information professionals; academic researchers; practitioner-researchers; and others with a stake in the future of LIS research, such as officials of the LIS professional and funding bodies. We are particularly keen to attract to the event those who work at the frontline of library and information services delivery, whether or not they are research-active or currently use the research outputs of others in their work. Our confirmed speakers, and the themes of their talks, cut across all LIS contexts, with presentations on the impact and value of LIS research from individuals with experience of public, academic, special and national libraries, both as service providers and as users. There will also be contributions on the impact and value of past investments at national level to support LIS research in the UK ? notably the Library and Information Science Research Coalition (2009-2012) and the Developing Research Excellence and Methods (DREaM) project (2011-2012) - and new proposed initiatives to provide the necessary infrastructure for future support in the field. It is a city located inland in the eastern part of the country on the right bank of the river Drava. Osijek, as a city finds it’s foundations in the ancient times when Romans established colonies in these places. Various cultures have left their mark in this city, since Osijek is also strategically well-positioned, and you do not have a long drive to neighbouring countries like Hungary and Serbia. In its close vicinity there is a must-see Nature Park Kopa?ki rit, also called the European Amazon which was declared a part of the Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO. The city is affiliated with many notable persons such as two Nobel Prize winners (Lavoslav Ru?i?ka and Vladimir Prelog), Branko Lustig, a Hollywood producer and winner of two Oscars (for Schindler's List and Gladiator) and Julije Knifer, abstract painter The city is increasingly attracting young populations thanks to its university and a growing software development scene. Osijek is also known as a gastronomical capital of Croatia, offering diverse specialties such as fresh fish, game, organic veggies, homemade pastry etc. The city has a growing craft beer scene, and its surrounding is traditionally well known as a wine making region. The city is considered as a local capital of bicycling and every June it hosts Pannonian Challenge, an extreme sport and music festival. More interesting and useful information about Osijek you can find at: https://www.tzosijek.hr/index.php Invitation to institutions – Sponsorship Libraries, information agencies, professional organizations, publishers, and service providers are invited to consider participation at BOBCATSSS 2019 by offering a demonstration, workshop or exhibit about their products and services, or by presenting a paper or poster about their activities and services, as related to the conference themes.
