[Eurchap] Science: us & them

Hello all,

At the Canadian Science Policy Conference (held in Ottawa in early November), the Governor General of Canada criticized non-scientific beliefs and called on the scientific community to rally society around facing our greatest challenges. Her remarks sparked a lot of controversy about religious neutrality of the state, technocracy, and so forth. At a broader level, her address created friction because it echoes a serious challenge in contemporary society: striking a balance between a pluralistic society and a (supposedly) univocal science.

In my blog post this week, I analyze the Governor General's remarks, and sketch out what this harmonisation might take. How can science be a rallying point for society when so much of society is unscientific?
