[Eurchap] Inequalities in publishing

Hi everyone,

With the first World Inequality Report released last week, we thought it would be interesting to see the extent to which we have similar challenges facing us within the research community. Accordingly, we followed Piketty's analytical approach outlined in Capital in the 21st Century and applied it to citation scores. The results are thought-provoking. The academic "Middle Class" fared much better than the economic Middle Class did in the US in 2010 (which is notable for its inequality, in Piketty's analysis). However, the academic "Lower Class" struggled much more than its economic analogues.

Hopefully these findings can inform our ongoing reflections about the structure of our research institutions, just as findings about income and wealth inequality prompt us to reflect on our economic and governmental institutions.
