For the panel ?Tomato tomahto: European perspectives on information science? at the AM2016 organized by our chapter member Julian I would like to gather and condense information on how EUChap members perceive the concept ?information science? from their particular point of view and specific background. I will categorize the descriptions and definitions and major as well as outstanding viewpoints will be presented during the panel. I hope that this will lead to a map of concepts related to ?information science? providing a ?visual? starting point for discussion among panelists and the audience. Hence, please send me an email (ipe at informatik.uni-kiel.de or i.peters at zbw.eu), tweet to me (@isabella83) or answer the post on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/asisteurochap/posts/1113447328722104) by completing following two sentences: 1) ?Information Science is .? 2) ?Information Science for me is ? All responses received by September 25th, 2016 will be taken into account for the analysis. Enhancing lives through Information and Technology A Combined SIG-SI and SIG-USE Full-Day Workshop: The Social Informatics of Work and Play (SIG-SI): Morning Information Behavior in Workplaces (SIG-USE): Afternoon ASIS&T Annual Meeting, Copenhagen, Denmark October 15, 2016 Organizers Katriina Bystr?m, Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, Katriina.Bystrom at hioa.no Pnina Fichman, Indiana University, Bloomington, fichman at indiana.edu Luanne Freund, University of British Columbia, Luanne.Freund at ubc.ca Howard Rosenbaum, Indiana University, Bloomington, hrosenba at indiana.edu Join us at ASIS&T in Copenhagen for a full-day pre-conference workshop to explore the ways in which our uses of information and technologies improve our work and social lives. Two vital and dynamic SIGs are joining forces for a workshop that will provide two interesting and complementary perspectives in the conference theme. In the morning session, SIG-SI will bring a perspective that focuses on the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) in work and play across all areas of ASIS&T. In the afternoon session, SIG-USE will focus on information related activities from different research perspectives and explores the significance of information seeking and use on our lives. Submissions may include empirical, critical, conceptual and theoretical papers and posters, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. The combined workshop will allow networking between members of both SIGs during the day. MORNING: THE SOCIAL INFORMATICS OF WORK AND PLAY (SIG SI) This year's conference theme is "creating knowledge, enhancing lives through information & technology." This is a particularly apposite theme for SIG-SI, because the social impacts of ICT and the complex relations among people, technologies, and the contexts of ICT design, implementation, and use have long been core concerns of social informatics. The SIG-SI morning session, our 12th annual gathering at ASIS&T annual meetings, will bring a critical perspective that focuses on the social aspects of ICT that cuts across all areas of ASIS&T This year, we are particularly interested in papers that investigate the social informatics of work and play. We define "social" broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. We also define "technology" broadly to include traditional technologies (e.g., paper, books, etc.), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include papers and posters that explore the ways in which people's uses of ICT affect their practices and behaviors while at work, play, and engaged in their social lives. We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium's theme, but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. Some of the questions we ask include: * What are the impacts of ICT on people's practices and behaviors while at work, play, and engaged in their social lives? * What are some of the ways our work and play practices shape the design and development of ICT? * What are the ways ICT positively and negatively impact organizations, work, play, and social life? * What kinds of theoretical and methodological frameworks are best suited for studying the mutual shaping of ICT and practices and behaviors while at work and play? The schedule for the morning session of the symposium will involve the presentations of papers, a panel of distinguished scholars, and the best social informatics paper awards for 2015. We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. SIG-SI symposium chairs Pnina Fichman, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA Howard Rosenbaum, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA Eric Meyer, Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford, UK Adam Worrall, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada AFTERNOON: INFORMATION BEHAVIOUR IN WORKPLACES (SIG-USE) This year's SIG USE symposium focuses on information issues at work. It acknowledges social, individual and technological perspectives on the roles and flows that information takes as part of physical and digital work. The broad approach relates to the conference theme with a focus on information behavior (IB) or on information practices (IP) in connection to workplaces. Earlier generations were accustomed to stable and localized work; now work activities and contexts have and are radically changing. During their work life, people may experience several career changes, are expected to learn new skills and adapt to new ideas as well as manage the increasingly fluid boundaries between work and leisure. Moreover, much of information and data are internetworked and accessible simultaneously by multiple mobile devices supporting networked communities anyplace, anywhere, anytime. This challenges both the creation and consumption of information used for work - or at work; it also affects how, when and where people work, as well as their productivity, collegiality and innovativeness. Despite, or perhaps due to, the advances in technology, today's workplaces remain challenged by how to create, discover, share, value and enhance information and knowledge at and for work; and, how to design and manage the systems that support these functions, which are so critical to organizationally effective and individually rewarding work. The issues are many, from the consequences of new devices that are stretching the ways that an organization works, to the efficacy dynamics (stress, motivation, collaboration, productivity, age, etc.) and to the new skills and expertise required to work in such changing and changeable environments. Information is indispensable in many, if not all, workplace activities; as a resource for getting work done as well as for learning, managing change, developing and maintaining processes and creating professional networks. Specific issues to be addressed depend on the interest of the participants and the issues they bring into the workshop. Welcome topics include: * Critical cultural information behavior - how do we infuse our workplaces and practices with diversity and social justice sensibilities? * Collaborative IB; virtual team * Digital workplaces, peopleless offices & officeless people - what happens when the physical workplace dissolves? * Everyday Life Information (in the workplace) * Frameworks for understanding IB/IP in work settings * IB/IP and workplace or information systems design * Organizational behaviour research - what can we learn from this field of research that is relevant to IB/IP? * Organizational information genres * Personal Information Management (in the workplace) * The blurring of lines between personal and professional in digital information use in the workplace * The impact of mobile devices on IB/IP in the workplace * Workplace culture, diversity and inclusion - how these shape and are shaped by information behaviour (IB)/information practices (IP)? * and any other work-related informational topics We aim to an interactive workshop to enable the fullest exchange of ideas amongst attendees. For this reason, we encourage participants to submit; even if participation without a paper/poster is an eligible option. The workshop features a keynote by Professor Hazel Hall (preliminarily confirmed), presentation of selected papers, a joint poster session between the SIGs, and roundtable discussions based on short papers and posters by participants. Documentation: short papers and posters are shared digitally among the participants. Roundtable discussions are documented by a designated person in each group and collated by symposium chairs to a short summary that is made available for the participants afterwards. Menou Dear tripleC Readers, We want to make you aware of a new, open call for abstracts to a tripleC special issue: Call for Abstracts: Academic Labour, Digital Media and Capitalism Special Issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/27 Guest Editors: Thomas Allmer and Ergin Bulut Modern universities have always been part of and embedded into capitalism in political, economic and cultural terms. In 1971, at the culmination of the Vietnam War, the Chomsky-Foucault debate reminded us of this fact when a young student pointed a question towards Chomsky: ?How can you, with your very courageous attitude towards the war in Vietnam, survive in an institution like MIT, which is known here as one of the great war contractors and intellectual makers of this war?? (Chomsky and Foucault 2006, 63) Chomsky responded dialectically, but also had to admit that the academic institution he is working for is a major organisation of war research and thereby strengthens the political contradictions and inequalities in capitalist societies. Edward P. Thompson, one of the central figures in the early years of British cultural studies, edited the book ?Warwick University Ltd? in 1970. Thompson was working at the University of Warwick then and published together with colleagues and students a manuscript that discovered, as the title suggests, the close relationship of their university with industry and industrial capitalism. The book also revealed some evidence of secret political surveillance of staff and students by the university uncovered by students occupying the Registry at Warwick at that time. The relationship between state control and global capitalism has intensified in the last decades. With the collapse of the welfare state and the drop of public funds, universities are positioning themselves as active agents of global capital, transforming urban spaces into venues for capital accumulation and competing for international student populations for profit. In this environment, students have to pay significant amounts of tuition for precarious futures. Similarly, teaching and research faculties across the globe have to negotiate their roles that are often strictly defined in an entrepreneurial manner. Increasingly, the value of academic labour is measured in capitalist terms and therefore subject to new forms of control, surveillance and productivity measures. As the recent cases of Steven Salaita (USA), Academics for Peace (Turkey) and the crackdown against students in India reveal, academic labour and academics in general are also facing immense challenges in terms of state control and freedom of speech. Situated in this economic and political context, the overall task of this special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique is to gather critical contributions examining universities, academic labour, digital media and capitalism. We are thus particularly interested in articles focusing on (1) the context, history and theoretical concepts underlying academic labour, (2) the relationship between academic work and digital media/new information and communication technologies/the Internet/social media and (3) the political potentials and challenges within higher education. We welcome submissions that cover one or more of the following or related questions. 1. Contextualising and Theorising Academic Labour ? What is the historical role of universities and academic labour and how has it changed over time? ? What is the role of universities for capitalist development in the age of neoliberalism and post-Fordism (e.g. employability, market-driven and industrial research)? ? How far can the neoliberal university be considered as medium and outcome of informational capitalism? ? How far can the university expansion be understood as a dialectic development of progress and regress, social achievement and advanced commodification? ? What is meant by concepts such as Warwick University Ltd, McUniversity, academic proletarianisation, edu-factory, corporate university, academic capitalism, entrepreneurial university, university gamble, digital diploma mills, global university, DIY university, etc. in the context of academic labour? How are these concepts related to the wider social context and the existing capitalist order? How can a systematic typology of the existing literature be constructed? ? What is the role of the concept of value for understanding academic labour? ? What is the role of the concepts of the working class and the proletariat for theorising academic labour? ? How should we define academic labour; who is included/excluded by this understanding? Where does adjunct labour stand? ? What kind of workers are academics and how are they related to knowledge, informational and cultural workers? ? How far can the outcomes of academic labour be considered as part of the information and communication commons? ? To what extent rests informational capitalism on the commons produced at universities? ? What are the important dimensions for constructing a typology of working conditions within higher education (e.g. new managerialism, audit culture, workload, job insecurity)? ? How do different working contexts and conditions in academia shape feelings of autonomy, flexibility and reputation on the one hand and precariousness, overwork and dissatisfaction on the other? 2. Academic Labour and Digital Media ? Given that the academic work process is today strongly mediated through digital media, to what extent can academic workers be considered as digital workers, and academic labour as digital labour? ? In how far can digital education and online distance learning be understood as a new capital accumulation strategy that aims at attracting international students in a commodified and competitive higher education market? ? In how far can digital education be regarded as a response to neoliberal conditions within higher education? ? How do digital media/new information and communication technologies/the Internet/social media frame the working conditions of academics? ? How are the working conditions of academics characterised by intensification and extensification in the realm of the digital university (e.g. the blurring of working space and other spaces of human life, the blurring of labour and free time, fast academia, always-on cultures, deskilling, casualisation, electronic monitoring, digital surveillance, social media use for self-promotion, new forms of intellectual property rights)? 3. Politics, Struggles and Alternatives ? How do the broader political realities and potentials in terms of solidarity, participation and democracy at universities look like? ? What is the relationship between the state and academic labour? What are some of the lessons that we can learn from global crackdowns on academic labour? ? What are the challenges in order to reclaim the university as site of struggle for both academics and students? ? How far can the struggle at universities be connected to the global struggle against capitalism? ? How do the political potentials of alternatives within higher education look like (e.g. informal learning processes, co-operative education, open education, open access, copyleft, creative and digital commons, Wikiversity)? These new forms of digital enhanced communication and collaboration have been rapidly adopted and integrated into people?s everyday lives. Understanding the nature and consequences of these new interactions and social transformations is crucial if we want to design and shape a better future where digital technologies become an integral component of our life. One major challenge we have identified is the exploration of the two-way interactions between society and ICT with a focus on the Humanities. This particular orientation has the potential to become a key success factor for the values and competitiveness of many Nordic countries having in mind recent EU and Swedish political discussions in the field of Digital Humanities. The International Digital Humanities Symposium will take place in V?xj?, Sweden, 7-8 November. The symposium invites and challenges Nordic and European researchers and practitioners in related disciplines to Digital Humanities (DH) to present, discuss and demonstrate different possibilities, current efforts and upcoming trends in this emergent field. The symposium is organized by Digital Humanities Initiative at Linnaeus University with support from Linnaeus University, DARIAH-EU and Information Engineering Centre. Confirmed invited speakers: * Mike Mertens, the CEO of DARIAH-EU * Theresa Anderson, Connected Intelligence Centre, University of Technology Sydney, Australia Important Dates: * Submission deadline: Friday, 16 September 2016 Monday, 29 September 2016 (now extended due to many requests) * Notification of acceptance: Friday, 30 September 2016 Monday, 10 October 2016 * Symposium?s dates: Monday and Tuesday, 7 and 8 November 2016 Proposals are invited for the following categories: Presentations (typically 15 minutes plus discussion time, potentially longer if warranted) on work related to the themes of the symposium (see below). Interactive Demos on work related to the themes of the symposium (see below). Posters on work related to the themes of the symposium (see below). * Please email proposals (maximum 1000 words for presentations and 500 words for demos and posters, including aims, research questions, methods, main findings and underlying work, relevance to themes of workshop) to dh at lnu.se. * Please use the template available at http://goo.gl/OtPQ5 to submit your contribution. Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the international program committee (to be announced). At least one presentation author needs to register for the symposium (this is a strict requirement). After the symposium, copies of proposals, presentations (demos, posters) will be made available on the symposium website. Selected presentations from the workshop may be invited for submission as full papers for a peer reviewed publication. The main themes for the symposium are: 1. Defining Digital Humanities. Digital Humanities are still an emerging field and exploring how the humanities may evolve through their engagement with technology is an important discussion topic. 2. Cross-sector collaboration in Digital Humanities to address societal challenges. Digital Humanities bear the potential for the academic and public and private sectors to collaborate on interdisciplinary research and innovation to tackle societal challenges. 3. Combining methodologies and approaches from different disciplines supported by computational tools. Special emphasis should be given to methodological issues of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Further timely presentations/demonstrations/posters will be selected from the following topics in the CfP: 1. Curating online collections of data and information resources 2. Metadata and interoperability 3. Data mining large cultural data sets 4. Application of tools provided by computing (such as Hypertext, Hypermedia, data visualisation, information retrieval, data mining, text categorization, statistics, text mining, digital mapping) in the humanities 5. Digital publishing 6. Novel uses and applications of Interactive visualization techniques 7. GIS (Geographical Information Systems) 8. Multimedia games 9. Digital story telling 10. Social network analysis 11. Bibliometrics /scientometrics / informetrics. Chapter of the Year We are pleased to announce that the European Chapter is the 2016 winner of the ASIS&T regional Chapter of the Year Award. In selecting European Chapter for the award, the jury considered the chapter?s membership, activities, communications, financial and administrative management, and contributions to ASIS&T and the broader IS community. The Chapter takes advantage of the regional information science meetings to hold their own chapter meetings. Great focus on the 2016 ASIS&T Annual Meeting and the very important contributions to the success of the meeting dully noted. Also, recognizing the fact that the students are our future, such collaboration with and focus on student members is very important and essential to the success of ASIS&T. The chapter surveyed its members to understand members? needs and the jury members impressed with the honesty with which the leadership has identified the issues and is tackling the problems. Chapter Event of the Year The 2016 Chapter Event-of-the-Year Award goes to New Jersey ASIS&T for the first ASIS&T Regional Meeting held at Rutgers University on April 15: https://www.asist.org/events/asist-regional-meeting-2016-rutgers-university/. The nomination received high point with a theme of participant engagement. Reviewers noted the timeliness of the topic, diverse and well-known speakers, and opportunities for students and SIGs engagement. It was well-publicized and well attended, both face to face and virtual. As described by the nominator, this event brought together students chapters from Rutgers, Pratt, and Drexel together in working with the NJ Chapter, setting a good example of chapters could collaborate in mutually beneficial way. In addition to executing a highly successful program, this event created a milestone in ASIS&T and set an example of how ASIS&T could create value for its members at a local level. Chapter Member of the Year The award goes to Dr. Isabella Peters, whose outstanding service and leadership to the European Chapter (EC) has been identified by several members and officers. Dr. Peters has served as chair and advisor of the European Chapter, and has been a dedicated and active member of ASIST for many years. She has actively advertised and administered the ASIS&T free student membership program for the European Chapter, renewed and upgraded the EC website and Facebook pages, and provided advise and support to the EC Student Chapter. Dr. Peters has served as a mentor for ASIS&T New Leaders program, organized New member brunches at the Annual Meetings, and participated in delivering high-value webinars to the members. Congratulations to the winners of these prestigious awards. Hope to see you all in Copenhagen next month!
