It has been recommended that students publishing in JASIS&T, prestigious regional publications or conferences and participation in chapter events and activities would receive special consideration. Students from Developing Nations, as described on the ASIST website, should receive special consideration. A student may be eligible for selection only one time. It has also been recommended that (1) each country representative (see http://www.asis.org/Chapters/europe/?page_id=18#members) can nominate one student; (2) the EC Chair and Chair-elect can nominate one student each; and (3) the Chair of Student Chapter can nominate one student. Students can also be recommended or request consideration by submission of a request to the Chapter Chair (Isabella Peters; i.peters at zbw.eu). So, please send us your nominations by Sunday, August 14th and describe in up to 280 characters why you think the student should become an ASIST member or what makes him or her deserve the free membership. We hope to have representations from many countries, and we also want to reward and encourage student participation in chapter activities! Please share this information widely! More details below. Best, Nils The ACM SIGIR Conference on Human Information Interaction & Retrieval (CHIIR) will be held in Oslo, Norway from March 7-11, 2017. CHIIR is the pre-eminent forum for the presentation and discussion of research related to the user-centered aspects of information interaction and information retrieval, including human involvement in search activities, information seeking and use in context, and the design of interactive systems. Many areas of interest for CHIIR have traditionally been covered under "Users and interactive IR" at the SIGIR Conference, and at the HCIR and IIiX conferences, which have merged to form the CHIIR conference. Conference Scope and Topics Users are central to the design, evaluation, and use of information retrieval systems. We invite submissions on user-centered approaches to information retrieval, access, and use, including studies of interactive systems, novel interaction paradigms, new evaluation methods, and a range of related areas. We are particularly interested in papers in the following areas: * Information seeking, search and retrieval, including task-based and exploratory search * Interaction techniques for information retrieval and discovery * Online information-seeking behavior, including log analysis of search and browsing * Modeling and simulation of information interaction * Search user interfaces, including those for specialized tasks, populations and domains * Information use, including measures of use and sensemaking * Field and case studies relevant to information retrieval and access * User-centered evaluation methods and measures, including measures of user experience and performance, experiment and search task design, eye-tracking and physiological approaches, data analysis methods, and usability * Context-aware and personalized search, contextual features and analysis for information interaction * Collaborative information seeking and social search, including social utility and network analysis for information interaction * Information visualization and visual analytics, search result presentation * User-centered work in other areas of information retrieval Contribution Types Full papers: We are looking for high quality original research of relevance to CHIIR as full paper submissions (10 pages). We expect submissions to contain a rigorous evaluation of any proposed findings, using techniques such as laboratory studies, field experiments, in situ observational studies, crowdsourcing, simulations of search behavior, and log analysis. Authors should describe their methods and techniques in enough detail to allow for replication and reuse. Short Papers: Short papers (4 pages) should also be original, high-quality submissions, like full papers, but based upon a smaller, concise contribution. These may present work in progress, late-breaking results, reports on projects or applications, or demos. Accepted short papers will be published as part of the proceedings, but will also be presented as posters during the poster reception at the conference. Perspectives Papers: a special category of full papers (10 pages) that present novel ideas or insights concerning approaches, key challenges, or methodological issues that have the potential to inspire substantive discussion and lead to significant advances in the field. These papers should not consist primarily of literature reviews or the presentation of stand-alone studies, but may take the form of: * reflections upon the body of research, considering how the field, the theories, the models, and the methods have developed; * discussion of the implications of research findings on users in the real world; * proposals for and discussions of theories or models of information-interaction; or * critical, provocative, and creative contributions to stir debate and discussion. Workshops: We encourage prospective workshop organizers to submit proposals for highly interactive workshops (either full-day or half-day) that fall within the scope of the conference. We are particularly interested in workshops that bridge multiple approaches or present new perspectives on user-centred aspects of information interaction and information retrieval. Workshops will be held on the last day of the conference. Application instructions are available on the conference web page at http://sigir.org/chiir2017/ Tutorials: Proposals will be considered for full day or half day tutorials. Tutorials may cover material either at an introductory level (introducing new areas of research or practice to attendees) or in depth (advancing the understanding of attendees with basic familiarity of the area). Application instructions will be available on the conference web page at http://sigir.org/chiir2017/ Doctoral Consortium: We invite doctoral students to submit applications for a supervisory seminar, to present and discuss their research with senior researchers and other doctoral students. The consortium will take place on the first day of the conference. Application instructions are available on the conference web page at http://sigir.org/chiir2017/ Conditions * CHIIR submissions should be original, high quality research that has not been published previously and are not under review for another conference or journal. * An international program committee will review all submissions. * All reviews will be double-blind so submissions should be made anonymous when submitted. * Full papers and Perspectives papers will be up to 10 pages in length, while short papers will be up to 4 pages. * All submissions should be formatted using the ACM Conference style (for LaTeX or Word). Submissions should be made in PDF. * All accepted submissions will be made available in the ACM Digital Library as part of the CHIIR series. These new forms of digital enhanced communication and collaboration have been rapidly adopted and integrated into people?s everyday lives. Understanding the nature and consequences of these new interactions and social transformations is crucial if we want to design and shape a better future where digital technologies become an integral component of our life. One major challenge we have identified is the exploration of the two-way interactions between society and ICT with a focus on the Humanities. This particular orientation has the potential to become a key success factor for the values and competitiveness of many Nordic countries having in mind recent EU and Swedish political discussions in the field of Digital Humanities. The International Digital Humanities Symposium will take place in V?xj?, Sweden, 7-8 November. The symposium invites and challenges Nordic and European researchers and practitioners in related disciplines to Digital Humanities (DH) to present, discuss and demonstrate different possibilities, current efforts and upcoming trends in this emergent field. The symposium is organized by Digital Humanities Initiative at Linnaeus University with support from Linnaeus University, DARIAH-EU and Information Engineering Centre. Confirmed invited speakers: * Mike Mertens, the CEO of DARIAH-EU * Theresa Anderson, Connected Intelligence Centre, University of Technology Sydney, Australia Important Dates: * Submission deadline: Friday, 16 September 2016 * Notification of acceptance: Friday, 30 September 2016 * Symposium?s dates: Monday and Tuesday, 7 and 8 November 2016 Proposals are invited for the following categories: Presentations (typically 15 minutes plus discussion time, potentially longer if warranted) on work related to the themes of the symposium (see below). Interactive Demos on work related to the themes of the symposium (see below). Posters on work related to the themes of the symposium (see below). * Please email proposals (maximum 1000 words for presentations and 500 words for demos and posters, including aims, research questions, methods, main findings and underlying work, relevance to themes of workshop) to dh at lnu.se. * Please use the template available at http://goo.gl/OtPQ5 to submit your contribution. Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the international program committee (to be announced). At least one presentation author needs to register for the symposium (this is a strict requirement). After the symposium, copies of proposals, presentations (demos, posters) will be made available on the symposium website. Selected presentations from the workshop may be invited for submission as full papers for a peer reviewed publication. The main themes for the symposium are: 1. Defining Digital Humanities. Digital Humanities are still an emerging field and exploring how the humanities may evolve through their engagement with technology is an important discussion topic. 2. Cross-sector collaboration in Digital Humanities to address societal challenges. Digital Humanities bear the potential for the academic and public and private sectors to collaborate on interdisciplinary research and innovation to tackle societal challenges. 3. Combining methodologies and approaches from different disciplines supported by computational tools. Special emphasis should be given to methodological issues of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Further timely presentations/demonstrations/posters will be selected from the following topics in the CfP: 1. Curating online collections of data and information resources 2. Metadata and interoperability 3. Data mining large cultural data sets 4. Application of tools provided by computing (such as Hypertext, Hypermedia, data visualisation, information retrieval, data mining, text categorization, statistics, text mining, digital mapping) in the humanities 5. Digital publishing 6. Novel uses and applications of Interactive visualization techniques 7. GIS (Geographical Information Systems) 8. Multimedia games 9. Digital story telling 10. Social network analysis 11. Bibliometrics /scientometrics / informetrics. URL: From Nils.Pharo at hioa.no Fri Aug 26 09:24:15 2016 From: Nils.Pharo at hioa.no (Nils Pharo) Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2016 13:24:15 +0000 Subject: [Eurchap] Extended deadline for full papers at CHIIR'17 Message-ID: <085da57e34bb44788bacd71f6a79f538@casmbx-01.ada.hioa.no> In response to numerous requests, we have extended the deadline for full papers at CHIIR'17 to September 6. The ACM SIGIR Conference on Human Information Interaction & Retrieval (CHIIR) will be held in Oslo, Norway from March 7-11, 2017.
