With the help of the computational intelligence, these digital ecosystems can exhibit new self-* properties (such as self-management, self-healing and self-configuration) environments, thanks to the re-combination and evolution of its "digital components", in which resources provided by each entity are properly conserved, managed and used. The underlying web-based resources mainly comprehend big data management, innovative services, smart and self-* properties platforms. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of digital ecosystems, they are highly complex to study and design. This also leads to a poor understanding as to how managing resources will empower digital ecosystems to be innovative, intelligent and value-creating. The application of Information Technologies has the potential to enable the understanding of how entities request resources and ultimately interact to create benefits and added-values, impacting business practices and knowledge. These technologies can be improved through novel techniques, models and methodologies for fields such as big data management, web technologies, networking, security, human-computer interactions, artificial intelligence, e-services and self-organizing systems to support the establishment of digital ecosystems and manage their resources. The International ACM Conference on Management of computational and collective IntElligence in Digital EcoSystems (MEDES) aims to develop and bring together a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry interested in exploring the manifold challenges and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and how current approaches and technologies can be evolved and adapted to this end. MEDES 2014 calls for full papers presenting interesting recent results or novel ideas in all areas of Emergent Digital EcoSystems. At the same time, the conference calls for short papers presenting interesting and exciting recent results or novel thought-provoking ideas that are not quite ready, and preferably include a system demonstration. Topics ------- MEDES 2014 seeks contributions in the following 10 areas: 1. Digital Ecosystem Infrastructure 2. Green computing 3. Computational and Collective Intelligence 4. Services 5. Trust, Security & Privacy 6. Data & Knowledge Management 7. Internet of Things and Intelligent Web 8. Human-Computer Interaction 9. Networks and Protocols 10. Open Source Paper Submission ---------------- Submissions must be in an electronic form as PDF format and should be uploaded using the conference website. The submitted paper should be at most 8 ACM single-space printed pages. Papers that fail to comply with length limit will be rejected. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 peer reviewers. After the preliminary notification date, authors rebut by evidence and arguments all reviewer inquiries and their comments. Based on the rebuttal feedback, reviewers notify authors with the final decision. Selection criteria will include: relevance, significance, impact, originality, technical soundness, and quality of presentation. Preference will be given to submissions that take strong or challenging positions on important emergent topics related to Digital Ecosystems. At least one author should attend the conference to present the paper. The conference Proceedings will be published by ACM and indexed by the ACM Digital Library and DBLP. Important Dates ---------------- Extended Submission Deadline: 8 June 2014 Notification of Acceptance: 5 July 2014 Camera Ready: 20 July 2014 Conference Dates: 15-17 September 2014 Keynote Speakers ---------------- Fabien Gandon, INRIA, France Ton Kalker, DTS Incorporation, USA Kwei-Jay Lin, University of California, Irvine, USA Azer Bestavros, Boston University, USA Roger Lee, Central Michigan University, USA Special Tracks: ---------------- Big Data Processing and Management Computational Intelligence Workshops ---------- - 2nd International Workshop on Security and Privacy Preserving in e-Societies (SECES) - Workshop on Advances in Intelligent Environmental Monitoring (AIEM) Special issues and Journal Publication --------------------------------------- Extended versions of selected papers will be published in several peer reviewed journals. There are still few tickets available so check your dates and pack your sun block! This year's conference theme is divided into two parts. The first part addresses advances in qualitative assessment methods and practices and the second part covers assessment methods involving alternative metrics based on social media and a wider array of communicative activities, commonly referred to as ?altmetrics.? Professors Tefko Saracevic (Rutgers University, US) and Tatjana Aparac-Jelusic (University of Zadar, Croatia) will open the Conference. Over a period of five busy conference days participants will have a chance to listen to dozens of renowned international speakers, and in particular our invited speakers who will address the conference topics from many aspects: ?David Bawden (Centre for Information Science City University London, UK): 'The noblest pleasure'?: on gaining understanding from qualitative research ?Blaise Cronin (School of Informatics & Computing Indiana University, US): Beethoven vs. Bieber: on the meaningfulness of (alt)metrics ?Elke Greifeneder (Royal School of Library and Information Science, Denmark) Big data does not equal big picture ?Donald Case (University of Kentucky, US): Sixty years of measuring the use of information and its sources: from consultation to application ?Cassidy R. Sugimoto (Indiana University, US): The Metric Menagerie: Tweets, Likes, and Other Social Media Metrics in the Library ?Paul Wouters (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Netherlands): The metrics acumen: supporting individual researchers in assessment ?Marija Brajdi? Vukovi? (University of Zagreb, Croatia): Challenges of globalized evaluation practices in the context of semi-peripheral and localized knowledge production This year's Guest of honour is professor Garry Marchionini (University of North Carolina, US) who will present on "Libraries and literacies: from I to we". All information on LIDA conference, including accommodation and registration, is available at http://ozk.unizd.hr/lida/ Looking forward to welcoming you in Zadar! The new category ?I was at?? will give you the chance to share your experience from conferences around the world. This category replaces the former ?Reports? category where students wrote summaries of conferences they have attended. By introducing the new category, we would like to bring the focus on you as the author and your individual experiences. Tell us what your interests are and why you attended at the conference. What was your personal highlight and if you had the chance to present your own work ? tell us more about this! We invite you to share your experiences with our audience. By the way, we know that not only young researchers but a lot of professors are readers of this newsletter, too. This newsletter primarily addresses students and researchers of Library and Information Science but you can also write about related fields like eGovernment, social science, arts or computer science. We would like you to share those experiences, as well. Why should you share your experience? ? You will have the chance to reach young researchers and information professionals in Europe and the entire world. ? If you have had a publication in a conference proceeding, this newsletter is a good way to inform a larger audience about your work. ? You may inspire young researchers who are looking for interesting research topics. ? You can show others how conferences in library and information science are organized in your country or community. In the attachment you will find a prototypical form of this new category. If you like to share your own experiences just use this form. It serves as a guideline: you are not obliged to fill out every field and you may also create new fields for your own needs. Merely the characteristics of this category (attached you will find an example) should remain. If you would like to write about an interesting conference, workshop or meeting that you have attended and contribute to the next newsletter, please write us an email: Agnes.Mainka at hhu.de Evelyn.Droege at ibi.hu-berlin.de We are looking forward to hearing from you soon!
