2004 ASIS&T Chapter Event of the Year Award

Congratulations to the two chapters that have won the 2004 Chapter Event of
the Year Award!

**The Los Angeles Chapter for their 2003 Workshop "Database-Driven
Websites" and
**The Potamac Valley Chapter for their program "Taxonomy and Metadata
Strategies for Effective Content Management"

The 2003 Fall Workshop presented by the Los Angeles Chapter, entitled
"Database-Driven Technology," showcased an overview of database-driven
technology and provided an opportunity to learn basic techniques and to
view applications of exciting new applications of web-based technology.
Speakers ranged from industry professionals and representatives from
academic, corporate and public institutions. Over 100 attendees from
information organizations of all types throughout California and Arizona
were in attendance. As one of the jurors enthusiastically remarked: "The
Los Angeles Chapter does a masterful job of designing and implementing
programming."

"Taxonomy and Metadata Strategies for Effective Content Management,"
presented by the Potomac Valley Chapter, was a very successful program on
taxonomies, providing real-world examples on how the right taxonomy can
organize content so users can find the right information at the right time
to solve the problem at hand. More than 80 people registered for the
program, featuring Joseph Busch, former ASIS&T president and founder of
Taxonomy Strategies. He demonstrated the re-use of existing vocabulary
sources to create company-specific taxonomies and de-bunked many myths,
including the myth that taxonomy creation and descriptive cataloging can¹t
be done by mere mortals. The Potomac Valley Chapter deserves recognition
for providing its constituents a highly entertaining and educational
program on a timely topic.

Please join me in congratulating the Los Angeles and Potomac Valley
Chapters!
