Hi there everyone,
I thought I would resend Beata's terrific message of guidance about
starting the chapter in India so that it is in the archives of this list.
Thank you again, Dick, for setting the list up so quickly! It will be a
big help in the planning process.
Best,
Caryn

Dear Yashwant, Amrit and Pradip,
Let me echo Caryn's enthusiasm about the possibility of forming an
ASIS&T Chapter in India! It makes a lot of sense to bring together
ASIS&T members in India into a community to provide local programming
and services. If you manage to make this work, it could be a great
catalyst to increase ASIS&T membership in India which will in turn
strengthen the chapter and the organization as a whole.
Caryn is correct that reading the Chapter Officer's Manual is a good
start. The most important parts to read and use are Appendix B -
Organizing New Chapters and Appendix C - Model Bylaws for ASIS&T Chapters.
Basic guidelines for forming a new chapter: "Fifteen or more Members or
Representatives of Institutional Members living or working within an
area of not more than a 50-mile radius, or some other well-defined
geographic area, desiring to form a Chapter may submit to the Board of
Directors a written application signed by all the applicant Members
together with a set of tentative bylaws for the proposed Chapter. Upon
approval of the application and proposed bylaws, a charter will be
issued by the Board of Directors in the name of the Society. The
geographic boundaries of each Chapter shall be fixed by the Board of
Directors at the time the charter is approved and may be altered from
time to time." (from Appendix B)
Once you contact Dick Hill saying you are ready to form a chapter, you
will be sent instructions and information, including a sample petition
form. As you probably already know, you can easily get a list of all
ASIS&T members in India by doing a Membership Search once you're logged
in on the ASIS&T website
https://www.asis.org/Membership/Directory/DirectorySearch.html
Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help!
