*Professor and Director Jeannette Bastian Awarded NEA Distinguished Service
Award

Professor and Director of the Archives Management Concentration Jeannette
Bastian has been awarded the New England Archivists (NEA) Distinguished
Service Award

The NEA Distinguished Service Award recognizes Bastian's dedication to
NEA's objectives, and for her significant contribution to the archives
profession, and for "her efforts in promoting, advocating, and educating
our region’s archival community." Bastian received her award at the NEA
Spring Conference in Hyannis, Massachusetts on March 25.

*Professor Nanette Veilleux Honored for Open Source Contributions

Nanette Veilleux, Director of the Computer Science and Informatics Program,
is one of 21 instructors recognized
<https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/red-hat-honors-instructors-who-champion-open-source-education-us>
for championing open source education in the United States. Red Hat, Inc.,
the world's leading provider of open source solutions, seeks to recognize
the contributions of instructors who have incorporated open source
philosophies, methods, and tools into their academic work.

*Faculty*

Dean *Eileen Abels* participated in the Keynote Panel Session at “Library
2.017: Expertise, Competencies and Careers,” on March 29. The web
conference covers what skills librarians of the future will need to support
their libraries.

Associate Professor *Gerald Benoit* presented “Critical Theory, LIS and
Civic Engagement” as part of the Public Lecture Series on March 22. Benoit
also gave two presentations at Harvard Libraries about the role and future
of “Information Visualization” in library service. He is currently creating
an information visualization program and training program for librarians to
be informed about InfoVis services. He is now the Communications Officer
for SIG-VIS <https://www.asist.org/SIG/SIGVIS/>, the visualization, arts
and media group of ASIS&T.

Professor *Margaret Menzin* has organized “STEMinars”: hour long meetings
at which three STEM faculty members discuss scientific papers. In March,
Menzin led a discussion of the paper "Sex as an Algorithm" and Prof.
Veilleux led a discussion of her manuscript "Evidence, Intonation and
Prosody."

Professor *Nanette Veilleux* participated at a panel “Community Engagement
with Free and Open Source Software” and a Birds of a Feather session
“SIGCSE Reads: Time for Book Discussion” at the Special Interest Group on
Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) Technical Symposium held on March 8 in
Seattle, Washington.

*Staff*

*Dawn Stahura*, Simmons’ Zine Librarian, will be teaching a new eCourse she
designed for ALA, “Introduction to Critical Information Literacy: Promoting
Social Justice through Librarianship
<http://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2017/02/new-ecourse-introduction-critical-information-literacy-promoting-social-justice>.”
The 5-week eCourse starts on Monday, April 10. In Fall 2017, Stahura will
teach LIS 222 Mending Paths to Social Change at Simmons.

*Alumni*

*Michelle Baildon* ’03LS was featured in American Libraries Magazine in an
article, “Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Dispatches from ACRL
<https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/blogs/the-scoop/equity-diversity-inclusion-dispatches-acrl/>.”
Baildon, collections strategist for arts and humanities and a science,
technology, and society librarian, presented a poster March 23 at ACRL
titled “Creating a Social Justice Mindset.”

*Todd Gilman* ’01LS, Librarian for Literature in English at the Sterling
Memorial Library, Yale University, edited Academic Librarianship Today; the
new volume was published by Rowman & Littlefield in February 2017. He will
present a free ACRL-Choice webinar about the book on July 18, sponsored by
Rowman & Littlefield.
