(Feb 28, 2017) ?Long Island University?s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to preserve documents that are a vital part of Long Island?s history. The Palmer School is a recognized leader in library science and one of just 62 schools accredited by the American Library Association. It also offers the only Ph.D. program in Information Studies in the New York metropolitan area and is the only school of library and information science in that area to be admitted into membership in the prestigious iSchools Consortium. ?Long Island University is proud to partner our nationally recognized Palmer School with the resources of the Robert David Lion Gardner Foundation to help preserve Long Island?s history,? said LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline. With the Gardiner Foundation?s grant, LIU will digitize and preserve a collection of historical documents currently held by historical societies across Long Island, with a particular emphasis on Suffolk County. LIU will showcase these documents at an annual Gardiner Symposium, while promoting year-round visibility of these historical societies. The project will be led by Dr. Gregory Hunter, Professor of Library and Information Science who heads the doctoral program at the Palmer School. Dr. Hunter is a nationally recognized expert who was a key member of the team that designed and implemented the Electronic Records Archives for the National Archives and Records Administration. Dr. Hunter is Editor of The American Archivist, the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of American Archivists. "The Palmer School has been educating archivists and supporting the local historical community for three decades,? said Dr. Hunter. ?The generous grant from the Gardiner Foundation will help preserve Long Island's history and also ensure that the next generation of archival professionals has the skills to preserve history in the digital age." The grant includes significant scholarship support for masters and Ph.D. students at the Palmer School, in addition to opportunities for long-term fieldwork placement that benefit both the historical societies and Palmer School students. ?The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation?s mission is to promote our regional history. The artifacts and archives of historical societies are untapped treasure troves for researchers and scholars. It is our hope that this award will make these collections available as vital part of local historic study. The Palmer School program and students offer the expertise and resources to accomplish this goal,? said Kathryn M. Curran, Executive Director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. ### About Long Island University (LIU) LIU is one of the nation?s largest private universities. Background DBpedia and Wikidata currently focus primarily on representing factual knowledge as contained in Wikipedia infoboxes. A vast amount of information, however, is contained in the unstructured Wikipedia article texts. With the DBpedia Open Text Extraction Challenge, we aim to spur knowledge extraction from Wikipedia article texts in order to dramatically broaden and deepen the amount of structured DBpedia/Wikipedia data and provide a platform for benchmarking various extraction tools. Mission Wikipedia has become the ubiquitous source of knowledge for the world enabling humans to lookup definitions, quickly become familiar with new topics, read up background infos for news event and many more - even settling coffee house arguments via a quick mobile research. The mission of DBpedia in general is to harvest Wikipedia?s knowledge, refine and structure it and then disseminate it on the web - in a free and open manner - for IT users and businesses. The DBpedia Association and the people behind this challenge are committed to provide the necessary infrastructure and drive the challenge for an indefinite time as well as potentially extend the challenge beyond Wikipedia. We provide the extracted and cleaned full text for all Wikipedia articles from 9 different languages in regular intervals for download and as Docker in the machine readable NIF-RDF format (Example for Barrack Obama in English ). Challenge participants are asked to wrap their NLP and extraction engines in Docker images and submit them to us. We will run participants? tools in regular intervals in order to extract: 1. Facts, relations, events, terminology, ontologies as RDF triples (Triple track) 2. Useful NLP annotations such as pos-tags, dependencies, co-reference (Annotation track) We allow submissions 2 months prior to selected conferences (currently _http://ldk2017.org/_ and _http://2017.semantics.cc/_ ). Participants that fulfil the technical requirements and provide a sufficient description will be able to present at the conference and be included in the yearly proceedings. *Each conference, the challenge committee will select a winner among challenge participants, which will receive 1000?. * Results Every December, we will publish a summary article and proceedings of participants? submissions at _http://ceur-ws.org/_ . The first proceedings are planned to be published in Dec 2017. We will try to briefly summarize any intermediate progress online in this section. She is Senior Research Scientist and Director of User Research at OCLC Research. She can be reached at connawaloclc.org I am happy to report that ASIS&T has been very active again in providing events and opportunities for our members to engage and to involve students, new members, and prospective members. The ASIS&T Regional Meeting at OCLC on 3 March 2017 ( https://www.asist.org/events/asist-regional-meeting/asist-regional-meeting-o clc/) was well attended and provided a range of topics for the attendees and presenters to discuss and learn about from each other. It was wonderful for me to have OCLC as our host and for my supervisor, Lorcan Dempsey, OCLC Vice President of Membership and Research and Chief Strategist, to present the welcome to the presenters and attendees. ASIS&T, under the leadership of Sam Chu, also organized the Symposium on Research Design, Paper Writing & Publishing in Information Science at Hong Kong University 27-28 March. It was a platform to help ease what can be a sometimes arduous research process and to facilitate the publication of research. The symposium provided doctoral candidates and junior researchers an opportunity to learn from experts, to receive comments from them on their research, and to work with them in developing a conference paper for ASIS&T. It was a great success with participants from 11 universities and 7 countries. In addition to events, we have had some activity from the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and Chapters. The SIGs and chapters support year-round interaction. The chapters are overseen by the Chapter Assembly, and each group works through the year to deliver stimulating educational programs, projects and services and to recruit and retain members, and submits annual reports on their efforts. The SIGs are overseen by the SIG Cabinet Steering Committee and "give members with similar professional specialties the opportunity to exchange ideas and keep themselves informed about current and discrete developments in their fields." The importance of the role of our SIGs is exemplified by the creation and approval of the new Information and Learning Sciences SIG (SIG ILS). This SIG focuses on Learning Sciences, which is the interdisciplinary study of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Researchers draw on a wealth of knowledge from various fields including cognitive science, educational psychology, computer science, information sciences and design studies, among others. With the launch of this new SIG, ASIS&T members will have the opportunity to affiliate conference panels with the SIG. SIG ILS also hopes to host a workshop at the 2017 Annual Meeting, further supporting scholarship in this domain. The current chair of SIG ILS is Dr. Rebecca Reynolds - Rutgers School of Communication and Information. Contact rebecca.reynolds at rutgers.edu for more information and to become a member. I and the ASIS&T Board of Directors wish them all the best! The Visualization, Images, & Sound SIG (SIG VIS) just went live as they launched their website ( https://www.asist.org/SIG/SIGVIS/). They worked with ASIS&T Communications Officer, Yolande Nanayakkara, and other staff at HQ to ensure they were in compliance with the marketing policy that was approved by the Board, including the use of the current ASIS&T logo. This collaboration with HQ and compliance with the marketing policy provided excellent results. The Marketing Policy is to ensure that ASIS&T branding is consistent for increased visibility and to demonstrate that we are one organization. We have a new presentation template that was developed with HQ and Wei-Chung Cheng, Secretary of the Taipei Chapter and a doctoral student at the National Taiwan Normal University. Please use this new template for your ASIS&T SIG and chapter presentations. In addition to the approval of the Marketing Policy, the Board also approved Social Media Guidelines and Stephan Addo, Membership Services, is working with the Communications Officer to promote not only ASIS&T news and events, but news about our members. Our social media engagement has increased 10% and we have more people liking and retweeting our posts than ever before. The Asia Pacific, Taiwan, and Europe Chapters and SIG Education for Information Science (SIG ED) and SIG International Information Issues (SIG III) as well as the European Student Chapter have collaborated to develop a session, "ASIS&T Presentation: Professional Organizations in Career Development," for the iConference in Wuhan, China, on March 24. Our Brazilian colleagues are finalizing their preparations to establish a new regional, chapter (first from Latin America). The Brazil Regional Chapter's goals include facilitating networking and providing an organization through which members of ASIS&T located in Brazil may participate in and publicize ASIS&T activities in the country. Looking to upcoming events, the program committee is working hard on planning the 80th ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, from Oct 27-Nov 1, 2017. Unlike previous years when the conference ended on Tuesday, the conference is being extended to Wednesday. Please make note of the deadlines. The paper submissions are due on April 16th, panels and workshops are due on May 2nd and visual presentations (including posters, videos, storify, etc.) are due on June 23rd. To assist international attendees that might be affected by visa or U.S. entry issues, visa support letters for attendees and presenters will be issued promptly upon request (by filling out a form on the conference website). We will work with the reviewers to shorten the peer-review time for submissions due in May and June to allow earlier confirmation to presenters of the conference, leaving more time for visa processing. This support of our international colleagues also was addressed in the Board's public policy statement opposing the Executive Order requiring a 90-day suspension of visas to nationals from seven countries, which was posted on January 31, 2017 ( https://www.asist.org/news/asist-opposes-executive-order-to-suspend-visa-to- nationals-from-seven-countries/). The 2017 IA Summit Co-Chairs, Marianne Sweeny, Dave Cooksey and Susan Mercer, have invited me to present a welcome to the IA Summit attendees. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the Summit in person 22-26 March in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, but will present the welcome virtually. It is wonderful to be able to benefit from cross collaboration and learning, and I am thrilled to announce that ASIS&T is offering all IA Summit registrants an opportunity to experience the rewards of professional exchange by offering an ASIS&T annual membership at a special rate through June 30, 2017. As always, the program was exciting ( http://www.iasummit.org/program/) and the registration for workshops was 33% higher than the workshop registrations at the IA Summit 2016. The RDAP Summit 2017 ( https://www.asis.org/rdap/) will be held in Seattle, Washington, 19-21 April. The Summit registrations are higher than for the Summit 2016, and the two workshops were sold out by mid-March. This Summit is a great opportunity for data managers and curators, librarians, researchers, and data scientists to share ideas and to learn from one another. The ASIS&T Executive Director Search Committee, chaired by Sandy Hirsh and Clara M. Chu, is actively engaged with the executive search firm, Isaacson, Miller (IM), in identifying and reviewing candidates for the ASIS&T Executive Director position. The Search Committee has begun its initial review and screening of candidates. Semi-finalists will be selected in late March by the Search Committee and these semi-finalists will be invited to participate in first round interviews in early April. We are happy to announce that the past BIR and NLPIR4DL organizers are proposing this workshop at SIGIR together. In conjunction with the BIRNDL workshop, we will hold the 3rd CL-SciSumm Shared Task in Scientific Document Summarization. Reports from the shared task systems will be featured as part of a session at the workshop. === Important Dates === - Submissions deadline: May 23, 2017 - Notification: June 23, 2017 - Camera Ready Contributions: TBD - Workshop: August 11, 2017 in Tokyo, Japan === Aim of the Workshop === The BIRNDL workshop is the first step to foster a reflection on interdisciplinarity, and the benefits that the disciplines bibliometrics, IR and NLP can derive from it in a digital libraries context. The workshop is intended to stimulate IR researchers and digital library professionals to elaborate on new approaches in natural language processing, information retrieval, scientometrics, text mining and recommendation techniques that can advance the state-of-the-art in scholarly document understanding, analysis, and retrieval at scale. Researchers are in need of assistive technologies to track developments in an area, identify the approaches used to solve a research problem over time and summarize research trends. Digital libraries require semantic search, question-answering and automated recommendation and reviewing systems to manage and retrieve answers from scholarly databases. Full document text analysis can help to design semantic search, translation and summarization systems; citation and social network analyses can help digital libraries to visualize scientific trends, bibliometrics and relationships and influences of works and authors. All these approaches can be supplemented with the metadata supplied by digital libraries, inclusive of usage data, such as download counts. We invite papers and presentations that incorporate insights from IR, bibliometrics and NLP to develop new techniques to address the open problems in Big Science, such as evidence-based searching, measurement of research quality, relevance and impact, the emergence and decline of research problems, identification of scholarly relationships and influences and applied problems such as language translation, question-answering and summarization. Finding relevant scholarly literature is key point of the workshop and sets the agenda for tools and approaches to be discussed and evaluated at BIRNDL. At the workshop, we would also like to address the need for established, standardized baselines, evaluation metrics and test collections. See the proceedings of the first BIRNDL workshop at JCDL 2016 and a recent report in SIGIR Forum . This workshop will be relevant to scholars in computer and information science, specialized in IR, bibliometrics and NLP. The Shared Task is expected to be of interest to a broad community including those working in CL and NLP, especially in the sub-disciplines of text summarization, discourse structure in scholarly discourse, paraphrase, textual entailment and text simplification. The workshop will also be of importance for all stakeholders in the publication pipeline: implementers, publishers and policymakers. Formal citation metrics are increasingly a factor in decision-making by universities and funding bodies worldwide, making the need for research in applying these metrics more pressing. Today's publishers continue to provide new ways to support their consumers in disseminating and retrieving the right published works to their audience. Even when only considering the scholarly sites within Computer Science, we find that the field is well-represented - ACM Portal, IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar, PSU's CiteSeerX, MSR's Academic Search, Elsevier?s Mendeley, Tsinghua's ArnetMiner, Trier's DBLP, Hiroshima's PRESRI; with this workshop we hope to bring a number of these contributors together. === Workshop Topics === We invite stimulating as well as unpublished submissions on topics including - but not limited to - full-text analysis, multimedia and multilingual analysis and alignment as well as the application of citation-based NLP or information retrieval and information seeking techniques in digital libraries. Specific examples of fields of interests include (but are not limited to): - Infrastructure for scientific mining and IR - Semantic and Network-based indexing, navigation, searching and browsing in structured data - Discourse structure identification and argument mining from scientific papers - Summarisation and question-answering for scholarly DLs - Bibliometrics, citation analysis and network analysis for IR - Task based user modelling, interaction, and personalisation - Recommendation for scholarly papers, reviewers, citations and publication venues - Measurement and evaluation of quality and impact - Metadata and controlled vocabularies for resource description and discovery; - Automatic metadata discovery, such as language identification - Disambiguation issues in scholarly DLs using NLP or IR techniques; Data cleaning and data quality For the paper sessions, we especially invite descriptions of running projects and ongoing work as well as contributions from industry. Papers that investigate multiple themes directly are especially welcome. === Submission Details === All submissions must be written in English following Springer LNCS author guidelines (max. 6 pages for short and 12 pages for full papers, Springer LNCS: ; exclusive of unlimited pages for references) and should be submitted as PDF files to EasyChair. All submissions will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Please be aware of the fact that at least one author per paper needs to register for the workshop and attend the workshop to present the work. In case of no-show the paper (even if accepted) will be deleted from the proceedings and from the program. EasyChair: Workshop proceedings will be deposited online in the CEUR workshop proceedings publication service (ISSN 1613-0073) - This way the proceedings will be permanently available and citable (digital persistent identifiers and long term preservation). Wood & James Lowry* In his 1992 ?Postscript on the Societies of Control,? Gilles Deleuze diagnosed our society as a control society. He argued that the closure and containment that characterized the subject and the state - previously described by Michel Foucault as the product of modernity - was giving way to a much more complex set of sociotechnical configurations that blurred the boundaries and limits of control. Within the context of information studies, the concept of control has its own particular legacies. Posed as the cure to a natural chaos, the discipline?s pursuit of authority control, bibliographic control, and controlled vocabularies represent a field epistemologically invested in order. Since Deleuze's diagnosis, contemporary information systems and technologies have enabled unprecedented forms of control to permeate life at multiple levels, from the molecular to the global: From the manipulation of bioinformatic elements through gene sequencing to mass data collection policies, the relationship between information and control is increasingly entangled as they are threaded through our personal, professional, and public lives. Yet, as forms and mechanisms of control become more granular, the traditional modes of information control are challenged and the figure of the ?gatekeeper? recedes. New evidential paradigms signified by the diagnostic of ?post-truth,? new forms of consensus building via algorithmic logic, and a breakdown of the boundaries of information literacy all signify a challenge to traditional understandings of information control. This poses a challenge and opportunity for information scholars and researchers to engage with ideas and concepts around the society of control, across disciplines. By foregrounding the mechanisms, intended purposes, and unintended effects of the relationship between control and information, this special issue will provide a forum to explore and critically engage an as yet underdeveloped line of thinking. The scope of this issue might include research on: * Editorial control, citizen journalism and ?alt-facts? * Informational panopticons; data gathering, aggregation and re-use in the context of the international rise of the Right * Obfuscation, counterveillance and information activism * Analyses of information policy, including approaches to classifying and redacting * Political discourses about leaks, breaches and other forms of loss of control * Other overt and/or covert uses of records and information in the ?society of control? * Technologies and techniques of control within information systems o Taxonomies and controlled vocabularies o The ?politics of metadata? in relation to state control *Deadline for Submission: November 30, 2017* * * Types of Submissions JCLIS welcomes the following types of submissions: * Research Articles (no more than 7,000 words) * Perspective Essays (no more than 5,000 words) * Literature Reviews (no more than 7,000 words) * Interviews (no more than 5,000 words) * Book or Exhibition Reviews (no more than 1,200 words) Research articles and literature reviews are subject to peer review by two referees. ARTICLE 1 Public Participation Distribution and Marketing: An Inseparable Duality Patrick Weber (Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, University of Giessen, Giessen, Germany), Sascha Alexander Wagner (University of Giessen, Giessen, Germany), R?diger Kabst (University of Paderborn, Paderborn, Germany) The distribution of public participation in Western political environments has become an important topic in recent years. Low participation rates combined with low levels of trust toward government officials has resulted in low efficiency of public participation projects. Whereas prior research has focused on the quality of public participation projects, this study focuses on upstream processes to optimize public participation marketing and distribution. The present study tests the applicability of hierarchical marketing instruments with structural equation modeling in a sample of 266 individuals obtained from a random survey in Germany. The results indicate a sufficient relationship between the hierarchical steps. They also represent key communications tools for administrators to highlight the principles of openness and transparency. Nowadays Local Governments have as well a social media presence. The following contribution casts light on contemporary forms of democracy, deepening on concepts such as E-Government and E-Democracy. The paper describes as well how the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Social Media can benefit governance, and promote good governance, focusing on some experiences launched at the local and municipal level. Finally, it offers an empirical approach of the use of ICTs by the Office of the Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio. Iconography, semiotics, framing analysis and multimodal analysis are among the approaches that may be applied to digital materials. One may also ask, does the online make a difference to the study of the visual? That is, with which approaches is the image considered primarily, or secondarily, as a digital object embedded in online media? Apart from the change in the setting of the object, there may also be methods that emerge from the new media, engines and platforms. What kinds of so-called 'natively' digital methods can be repurposed productively for visual analysis? How to make use of the Google's reverse image search? More broadly, with the increasing focus on selfies and memes but also on Instagram stories, animated gifs, filters, stickers and emoticons, social media and digital communications are pushing for a visual turn in the study of digital culture. Such a push invites visual analysis into the realm of digital studies, too. One may begin to open the discussion of interplay by examining the new outputs such as journalists' data visualisations as well as policy-makers' dashboards like the open data city platforms. One may similarly compare visual literacies. Are there new ways of interpreting images through data, both substantively (which are the related materials?) and temporally (how do they develop over time? do they resonate? are they memes?). In digital methods, the image is not only a research object but also a research device. Making images "that can be seen and manipulated" (Venturini, Jacomy & Pereira 2015) enables scholars to access and actively explore datasets. How to make them and read them? At the same time, the technical properties of digital images both in terms of their color, resolution, and timestamp, as well as their 'networkedness', traceability and resonance, become available for research, allowing one to think with images (as visual guides and narratives) as well as through them (as data objects). Novel visual methodologies then emerge. There is the 'active' data visualisation, which includes research protocol diagrams, data dashboards, visual network analysis, and issue mapping. Protocol diagrams (Figure 1) guide analysts, programmers and designers through their collaborative research project. Data dashboards offer a visual aid for data metrics and analytics, in side-by-side graphs and tables; or become critical tools (as in the People's Dashboard). Visual network analysis offers a way into data that can be engaged with and requires an active research attitude (Venturini, Jacomy & Pereira 2015). Issue mapping renders legible the actors and substance of a (possibly controversial) issue (Rogers, S?nchez-Querub?n & Kil 2015). In a second group of approaches, the image is treated as a digitised or natively digital object of study. This includes visual and cultural analytics, which provide distant visual reading techniques to explore and plot visual objects such as selfies and websites based on their formal properties (Manovich 2014; Ben-David, Amram & Bekkerman 2016). Networked visual content analysis, in which images may be queried 'in reverse' to study their circulation, can be used to critically assess questions of representation and cultural standing (Figure 2). Another group of approaches repurpose visual formats, where more playful explorations appropriate (and tweak) the templates and visual aesthetics of the web, creating research GIFs and critical social media profiles (Figure 3). In this 10th Digital Methods Summer School we will explore and expand such digital methods for visual research, and critically inquire into their proposed epistemologies. We look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam in the Summertime! -- ## SUMMER SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY The Digital Methods Summer School is exploratory and experimental. It is not a setting for 'just' tool training or for principally tool-driven research. Substantive research projects are conceived and carried out. Participants are encouraged to 'span time with their issue' and the materials. In other words, we heed Alexander Galloway's admonition about data and tool-driven work: "Those who were formerly scholars or experts in a certain area are now recast as mere tool users beholden to the affordances of the tool - while students spend ever more time mastering menus and buttons, becoming literate in a digital device rather than a literary corpus" (Galloway 2014: 127). We encourage device and corpus literacy! The device training we ask you to do prior to the Summer School through online tutorials, and at the Summer School itself, in a kind of flipped learning environment (if you'll excuse the overused phrase), we would like to believe that you have familiarised yourself already with the tools and completed the tutorials available online. During the Summer School we will discuss and tinker with the nitty-gritty, aim to invent new methods, techniques and heuristics and create the first iterations of compelling work to be shared. ## ABOUT DIGITAL METHODS AS A CONCEPT Digital methods is a term coined as a counterpoint to virtual methods, which typically digitize existing methods and port them onto the Web. Digital methods, contrariwise, seek to learn from the methods built into the dominant devices online, and repurpose them for social and cultural research. That is, the challenge is to study both the info-web as well as the social web with the tools that organize them. There is a general protocol to digital methods. At the outset stock is taken of the natively digital objects that are available (links, tags, threads, etc.) and how devices such as search engines make use of them. Can the device techniques be repurposed, for example by remixing the digital objects they take as inputs? Once findings are made with online data, where to ground them? Is the baseline still the offline, or are findings to be grounded in more online data? Taking up these questions more theoretically (but also practically) there is also a Digital Methods book (MIT Press, 2013) as well as a complementary Issue Mapping book (Amsterdam University Press, 2015), and other digital methods publications. ## ABOUT THE DIGITAL METHODS SUMMER SCHOOL The Digital Methods Summer School, founded ten years ago, in 2007, together with the Digital Methods Initiative, is directed by Prof. Richard Rogers, Chair in New Media & Digital Culture and Department Chair at Media Studies, University of Amsterdam. The Summer School is one training opportunity provided by the Digital Methods Initiative (DMI). DMI also has a Winter School, which includes a mini-conference, where papers are presented and responded to. Winter School papers are often the result of Summer School projects. The Summer School is coordinated by PhD candidates in New Media at the University of Amsterdam, or affiliates. This year the coordinators are Sabine Niederer, Natalia S?nchez-Qu?rubin and Fernando van der Vlist. The Summer School has a technical staff as well as a design staff, drawn from the ranks of Density Design in Milan. The Summer School also relies on a technical infrastructure of some nine servers hosting tools and storing data, which recently (and intrepidly) moved to the cloud. In a culture of experimentation and skill-sharing, participants bring their laptops, learn method, undertake research projects, make reports, tools and graphics and write them up on the Digital Methods wiki. The Summer School concludes with final presentations. Often there are subject matter experts from non-governmental or other organizations who present their analytical needs and issues at the outset and the projects seek to meet those needs, however indirectly. For instance, Women on Waves came along during the 2010, Fair Phone to the 2012 Summer School and Greenpeace International and their Gezi Park project in 2013 as well as the COP21 Lima project in 2015. We have worked on the issue of rewilding eco-spaces with NGOs in the 2014 Summer School. More recently we have sought to repopulate city dashboards (Summer School 2015 and Winter School 2017). * Previous Digital Methods Summer Schools, 2007-2016, https://wiki.digita lmethods.net/Dmi/DmiSummerSchool. * Previous Digital Methods Winter Schools, 2009-2017, https://wiki.digita lmethods.net/Dmi/WinterSchool. * What's it like? The ATIR workshop aims to help foster collaboration of researchers working on different perspectives of axiomatic thinking and encourage discussion and research on general methodological issues related to applying axiomatic thinking to IR and related tasks. Enrique Amigo (UNED) Hui Fang (University of Delaware) Stefano Mizzaro (University of Udine) ChengXiang Zhai (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) * BIRNDL?17: Bibliometric-enhanced IR and NLP for Digital Libraries http://wing.comp.nus.edu.sg/birndl-sigir2017/ The second BIRNDL workshop stimulates IR researchers and digital library professionals to elaborate on new approaches in natural language processing, information retrieval, scientometrics, text mining and recommendation techniques that can advance the state-of-the-art in scholarly document understanding, analysis, and retrieval at scale. The workshop incorporates the third edition of the Computational Linguistics Scientific Summarization Shared Task. Muthu Kumar Chandrasekaran (National University of Singapore) Kokil Jaidka (University of Pennsylvania) Philipp Mayr (GESIS) * CAIR?17: Conversational Approaches to Information Retrieval https://sites.google.com/view/cair-ws Recent advances in commercial conversational services that allow naturally spoken and typed interaction, particularly for well-formulated questions and commands, have increased the need for more human-centric interactions in information retrieval. The CAIR workshop brings together academic and industrial researchers to create a forum for research on conversational approaches to search. A specific focus is on techniques that support complex and multi-turn user-machine dialogues for information access and retrieval, and multi-model interfaces for interacting with such systems. Jaime Arguello (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) Lawrence Cavedon (RMIT University) Hideo Joho (University of Tsukuba) Filip Radlinski (Google) Milad Shokouhi (Microsoft) * ECOM?17: eCommerce http://sigir-ecom.weebly.com/ The SIGIR Workshop on eCommerce serves as a platform for publication and discussion of Information Retrieval and NLP research & their applications in the domain of eCommerce. We bring together practitioners and researchers from academia and industry to discuss the challenges and approaches to product search and recommendation in eCommerce. Jon Degenhardt (?eBay) Surya Kallumadi (Kansas State University) Maarten de Rijke (University of Amsterdam) Luo Si (Alibaba) Andrew Trotman (University of Otago) Xu Yinghui (Taobao) * KG4IR?17: Knowledge Graphs and Semantics for Text Retrieval and Analysis https://kg4ir.github.io Large, publicly available knowledge graphs have given rise to many successful improvements on traditional information retrieval tasks such as ad hoc document retrieval. We focus on the end-to-end utilization of knowledge graphs and semantics in text retrieval and other IR-related applications. Our scope covers the acquisition, the alignment, and the utilization of knowledge graphs and semantic resources for the purpose of optimizing end-to-end performance of a system that responds to a user's information need. Examples of such technologies and applications include entity ranking, entity linking, entity-based retrieval models, entity recommendation, document filtering, knowledge graph population, and more. Laura Dietz (University of New Hampshire) Edgar Meij (Bloomberg) Chenyan Xiong (Carnegie Mellon University) * LIARR?17: Lucene for Information Access and Retrieval Research https://liarr2017.github.io/ The LIARR workshop brings together the community of researchers using Lucene, and its derivatives like Solr and Elasticsearch, and develop tools for IR research. There are three goals: First, create a development plan and common codebase for IR research with Lucene. Second, implement various information retrieval methods in Lucene/Solr/Elasticsearch, Third, evaluate the quality of such methods and models. LIARR is not a traditional ?mini conference?-style workshop but rather it is a hackathon for attendees to actually work with Lucene in a hands-on capacity. Presentations are meant as a tool for structuring and guiding the efforts of attendees. Hence, the workshop motto of: less yaking, more hacking. Leif Azzopardi (University of Strathclyde) Grant Ingersoll (Lucidworks) Jimmy Lin (University of Waterloo) Yashar Moshfeghi (University of Glasgow) Guido Zuccon (Queensland University of Technology) * Neu-IR?17: Neural Information Retrieval http://neu-ir.weebly.com The Neu-IR workshop brings the neural IR community together to specifically address key challenges facing this line of research. The workshop requests the community to submit proposals on generating large scale benchmark collections, building a shared model repository, and standardizing frameworks appropriate for evaluating deep neural network models. In addition, the workshop provides a forum for the growing community of IR researchers to present their recent (published and unpublished) work involving (shallow or deep) neural network based approaches in an interactive poster session. Nick Craswell (Microsoft) W. Bruce Croft (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) Jiafeng Guo (Chinese Academy of Sciences) Bhaskar Mitra (Microsoft) Maarten de Rijke (University of Amsterdam) * OKBQA?17: Open Knowledge Base and Question Answering The Second OKBQA Workshop aims to join forces in the collaborative development of open frameworks for knowledge extraction and question answering, to share standards, and to foster the creation of an ecosystem of tools and benchmarks. Specific topics include natural language interfaces for the Web of Data and the construction of knowledge bases for question answering. Key-Sun Choi (KAIST) Teruko Mitamura (CMU) Jin-Dong Kim (DBCLS) Axel-Cyrille Ngonga Ngomo (University of Leipzig) Piek Vossen (VU Amsterdam) Please look at the individual websites for the calls, and deadlines ? and participate in the discussion on the SIGIR?17 workshop day, on Friday August 11, 2017, in the beautiful scenery of Tokyo, Japan.
